First layer issues since firmware update
Hi,
I seem to be getting terrible first layer issues this morning. All of a sudden my mk3 has gone from perfect prints to making a mess on the [first layer every time [img][/ https://imgur.com/nThD30N ]. I have tried several different objects multiple times, every ones a first layer failure.
I have gone through z height calibration several times, using number between -0.500 to -0.700. The former leaves the trail un-pressed and loose, and the latter presses it too much and causes scarring on the first layer. However, no matter what the height was the layer was lifting off the bed and making a mess. It does not seem to stick to the best properly. The fault also happen on bends/corners the worst.
I clean the bed with 70% isopropyl alcohol and the problem occurs on all areas on both sides of the bed.
I have wiped the underneath of the nozzle to make sure there are no debris catching.
Has anyone got any suggestions of what this could be?
Re: First layer issues since firmware update
Based on what people were telling me when I was having some first layer adhesion issues:
Re: First layer issues since firmware update
When I switch from PETG to PLA, I have problems with the first layer adhesion, and then it does not help to clean with Isopropyl.
I wash the surface with a mild soap solution and rinse with water. After that, I have very good adhesion again.
And in your picture it looks like you need to lower the nozzle a bit. Try calibrating the first layer on a larger surface so you have plenty of time to fine-tune the thickness.

Re: First layer issues since firmware update
I will order some stronger alcohol today. Hopefully that will make a good difference. I'll also try 70 degrees.
WIth regard to the Z height, I've used values that are too high and too low in order to see if this was the problem, everything lifts off, both high and low Z values. I've gone to the point of scarring like the 572 in your attached picture.
It all just seems a little strange as the first layers have been going down great since I the printer arrived. Now suddenly both sides of my PEI sheet have stopped holding the PLA down, I've been using 70% alcohol and 60 degrees this whole time.
I've tried both 210 and 215 for the print temperature with the same results.
Re: First layer issues since firmware update
Wash the plate with a mild soap solution or detergent and you will have a good surface to print on.
When the plate is clean, you can use alcohol between the prints.

Acetone every other week is supposed to help too. Says the manual.
Re: First layer issues since firmware update
A clean with fairy liquid seems to have done the trick! I've ordered some stronger isopropyl alcohol too =D
Thanks all!

I always clean with acetone when I'm switching from one type of plastic to another. The acetone does a much better job getting off all the residue from the old print.
Re: First layer issues since firmware update
Acetone dissolves many fat substances, but not residues from, for example, Windex (window cleaners) or glue sticks.
It is better to wash with a mild soap solution.

Re: First layer issues since firmware update
Acetone can harm the PEI film if left on the surface too long.

Re: First layer issues since firmware update
I can confirm that occasional washing in detergent really works. Last night we suddenly could not get PLA to stick to the bed no matter what- multiple cleanings with 91% IPA did no good. I then washed the flex sheet in detergent & hot water, then dried it. I then did a quick wipe with acetone (while cold), followed by a quick wipe with IPA. Worked like a champ- PLA was sticking very well again.
