Filament Sensor on transparent filaments - and a bug (?)
Hi all,
The filament sensor is not detecting my transparent light blue colored PETG which triggers it from time to time to pause and request a change - but when inserting it detects it without any problem.
After two "changes" I turned the filament sensor off from the tune menu - and then the print stopped because of the "autoload" warning screen. I pressed the knob and the print continued. This shouldn´t happen during print because the hot nozzle might damage the print while stopped.
Best regards,
Richard
Re: Filament Sensor on transparent filaments - and a bug (?)
I have similar problem with transparent HDGlass from Formfutura. It stops from time to time and asking to change the filament. I switched off the filament sensor and seems to work so far. As it is optical sensor maybe it has problem with transparent filament. Just my guess.
Re: Filament Sensor on transparent filaments - and a bug (?)
I know Prusa has put a lot of effort to try and make this sensor more reliable. So far I print primarily in PETG and have found that I cannot use the sensor reliably with any transparent colors and Black. I print mostly Black PETG for the parts I need and have to make sure it stays off through all prints. I also found that there are real big problems when starting a print from OctoPrint and having a filament sensor event in the middle of the print. Usually destroys the print because it seems to skip sections of a layer when the event happens. I am on the latest fw release. I hope that eventually they will be able to get this work reliably with a color like PETG black which seems to be a color that a lot of people will be using. For right now it will have to stay disabled.
Re: Filament Sensor on transparent filaments - and a bug (?)
Refer to the Handbook that they give you. Section 12.3.3.3 kind of says that there will be trouble with more transparent, white, and black filaments. They do advise to just turn off the sensor with more translucent materials. I don't think it's a bug, it's just how the optics work on the sensors. I guess that just means you can't use a tiny spool of filament if it's under those conditions :(. Bummer.
Re: Filament Sensor on transparent filaments - and a bug (?)
I'd like to propose a feature request.
Make the menu on the filament change due to the filament sensor so that there's an option "everything's fine keep on printing" and disable the sensor until the print has finished.
Re: Filament Sensor on transparent filaments - and a bug (?)
I wander if it is possible to find a sensor that works at a frequency which the translucent and transparent filaments are opaque too rather than the current one which is somewhere in the visible light spectrum.
It should be possible. Just tried my mouse on an old lemonade bottle that the recycle marks claim is made out of PETG. The mouse worked no problem.
