Clicking filament/extruder?

Tried doing a larger print today to make a trash can. To try Vase mode, I decided to try using Slic3r PrusaEdition for the first time.

I had two major issues.

1) First layer has ripples and blotches. I think this is probably because X/Y belts may not be tight enough. Will fix next weekend.
2) Loud clicking and vibrating of filament.

Here is a youtube video showing details:

Please keep in mind, I am a total beginner. I have no idea what I'm doing. It took me over 24 hours to build my printer and get a benchy 😛
I got some advice from the community that I should change the tightness on the extruder idler gear. I plan to do that next weekend when I tighten down the X-Y belts.
I also forgot to disable retraction (I think Linear Advance replaces retraction?). But retraction should only happen during layer change, right? Not randomly during a large layer... I think. I have no idea.

If there is any more advice, please feel free to give it.

Re: Clicking filament/extruder?

Reduce the Live Z a little bit for better first layer. Loosen the idler bolts, they are most likely too tight. Or the bondtech groove isn't aligned with filament pathway.

Wow, thanks Josef!

If it's coming from Prusa himself, I think I can 100% believe the advice ;D

Okay, I will try some tweaks in the coming week, and maybe post a comparison video. Thank you!

Re: Clicking filament/extruder?

Hi there

My idee for the bad surface is the layer height like josef sait's . Most of the time that's the problem from a first layer. The clicking sound is propably from your extruder because the second layer infill is faster than the normal layer infill. That's why you don't have the problem on the first layer. In the second layer the extruder pushes harder because you have more pressure between the drive wheel and the nozzel.

I don't have a pruse printer yet so i can not give you more information whitch bolt you need to tighten.
I don't think that the bubbels are from the belts i think you see it more at a surface and not at a 100% infill

Good luck whith solving your problem.

Re: Clicking filament/extruder?

Oke i had a look in the manual

First of all i think the click sound is not so good for bondtech gears i think you need to tighten the 2 bolds that are discribed in the step 15 from the E axes mounting manual. I think the click sound is because the force of the 2 springs is not enough thats why the 2 gears open when the extruder push hard and the gears click over. If you do this to long you end up whith compleed round gears and that is no good i asume. 😉

Greetings

Re: Clicking filament/extruder?

Hey everyone!

I am experiencing the same problem: After a couple of hours of printing, the bondtech gears will no longer advance the filament, but rather click over. You can see how the abrasion thinned out the filament in the attached picture.

Notice how there appears to have formed a "swell" at the of the end of the end of the filament (→ right before the nozzle). This swell is so thick that it required substantial force to unload the filament, because it wouldn't pass through the PTFE feeder tube at the top of the extruder head.

It seems like the nozzle is clogged in some way, however, with a new piece of filament a new print will start fine.

What I tried so far:

  • I checked the alignment of the bondtech groves

  • loosened the idler bolts as per @josefprusa 's suggestion

  • checked the proper alignment of the pulley shaft as described here:
  • I created the gcode with the latest version of the Prusa Edition Slic3r, with the standard settings for Prusa PLA @ 0.05mm.

    Filament is Prusa PLA Ivory.

Earlier prints with the silver PLA that came with the printer all turned out great but the total time was shorter, so I am not sure whether the new filament or the printing time is to blame. As the error only occurs after a couple of hours, I thought I'd come here first, before wasting more filament.

    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Any luck on resolving your issue? I am having the exact same issue and my filament looks just like yours when I pull it out. Thanks.

I am having the exact same issue. It fails in this way every time I try to print something of size that takes more than a few hours.
I been on tech support chat several times. I've tried everything...
My pre-asembled printer is essentially brand new. I'm very disappointed because i cannot print large objects.

Can someone from Prusa please speak to this?

I agree with what Josef says about reducing the Z at the beginning, I have had this problem, and resolved it that way, however once you are sevral hours into a print the firmware option of adjusting the Z timesout and is not available, I have asked in the firmware thread if the Z adjustmest could stay permanent and not timeout.

I have the same problem. But i think i was able to identify the exact problem what is cousing this.

If i print any large object this does not happen. The problem only ocurs when there are lots of fine details on small object and the print head jumps here and there (lots of retractions in a small amouth of time).

For example this occurs every time while printing miniatures for D&D but newer while printing something like brio rail-roads for my son.

I'm gonna try tinkering with retraction speed and other settings during today and then report here 😉

I Had the same Issue for a long time and tried everything. I even cooled the Extruder Motor with a sep. Fan. But nothing worked to get 100% rid of this issue.

Finally i changed the Heartbreak to a e3d titan and never had a single problem since then.

The Clicking is caused by Prusas non standard Heartbreak.

This Video describes the issue very good:

    Hope this helps - Cheers

YES!!!  So I was partly right.

Is it a bug or feature? -> YES 😀

    thank you.

If that swell is 2.2 mm, and looks like this image, then you may be suffering the dreaded heat break jam.   Seems the step inside the Prusa heat break is at the hot to cold transition zone, and with parts having lots of retractions, melt can ooze up into this transition zone, cool and solidify, and then jam.  Printing 20c warmer, reducing retract from 0.8 mm to 0.4 mm, or printing slower, all can help get past the jam, sometimes.

A new heat break that doesn't have the step - well - worked for me, and many others.

    @tim-m30

Which heat break would you recomend to install? has it to be original from prusa or is it possible to instal a compatible one?

    Thanks!
