Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again

hey all -

I got my pre-assembled Mk3 about a month ago and have yet to get a successful print and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

On unboxing and powering up, it launched into the Wizard and during the "Searching bed" for the 4 calibration points, after it has asked me to place a sheet of paper under the nozzle, it gives me a "Calibration failed! Check the axes and run again" error each time:

https://ibb.co/cDyeUc

I posted in a FB group about the issue and was directed to the following link, but this hasn't resolved it:

http://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/9.+Preflight+check/514?lang=en

I also reached out to chat support and have been having a time-lapsed back-and-forth with them where I shoot them an email and wait 4-5 days for a response, and they have asked me to do a self-test and an auto-home, both of which run fine.

After some googling I have checked the trapezoidal nuts, but am still getting the calibration fail.

if anyone has any help, I would really appreciate it - I want to love this machine like everyone else seems to, but can't seem to get beyond thew first hurdle.

Thanks in advance!

Edited to add video

Re: Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again

Let me start with the questions everyone will ask you here.

1. What is the firmware version on your printer?
1a. Update it to the latest version. 3.1.3 and re-try.
2. I don't understand what you are describing?

My understanding.
You start the self test, and when it asks you to place a piece of paper on the printer, have you removed the spring metal sheet?
Could you make a video for us to see exactly when it's doing it.

Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.

Re: Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again

I built my Prusa i3 MK3 from a kit and got the same error message during XYZ calibration, even though the self-test passed without any problems.

In my case, the Z-screw covers (the little black pieces of plastic on top of the Z-axis motors) were too tight, causing the stepper motor drivers to think that the Z-axis reached the top of the frame when they were just a couple of centimetres from the heated bed. You should be able to loosen them a bit with your fingers without having to disassemble anything.

Thanks for the reply - am running 3.1.3 (pretty much the first thing I did was flashed the firmware) and sorry if I wasn't clear -

1. On the first boot the machine went to the Calibration Wizard.
2. It did the first few tests fine, then it got to the xyz calibration
3. It says "Calibrating Z"
4. It says "Is steel sheet on headbed" (which is not, of course)
5. It asks me to clean the nozzle for calibration
6. It asks me to put a piece of paper under the nozzle
7. It says "Searched bed calibration point 1 of 4"
8. The hotend assembly goes to the top of the Z axis
9. As it lowers, the minute it touches the bed it says: "Calibration failed! Check the axes and run again"

and that's where we are 🙂

I will make and upload a video a little later and again, appreciate the reply.

Thank you for the reply - do you mean these? If so, I have loosened them and tightened them, but it seems to be the same still.

Re: Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again

I have no idea. 😯

It looks as though the carriage is going down to start the Z axis calibration, and the moment it starts reading the pinda probe's temp something is crashing the software.

I've got a custom firmware that is buggy... But if you go to "support > temperatures (all the way at the bottom)" you can see your PINDA temp. What is that reading?

ANYONE ELSE
check to see if you can get a temp reading of your PINDA.

Just a hunch.

thanks again - the PINDA is reading 26 degrees - anyone know the 'correct' temperature reading?

That's right. (Mine is reading 0... Which is not. Just another bug in my firmware...)

Well that blows my idea or of the water.
All I had. 🙁

Re: Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again

Your spool holder is incorrectly mounted.
The X unit collides with the spool holder bracket. Install it on the back of the frame instead, then your calibration will work.

I feel like a complete idiot.

It's working.

I understand why you missed this. You are in a hurry to get started with the prints 😆

Re: Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again

I know its a late reply but I had the same issue with Z fail, running firmware 3.2.1-576, I updated to 3.3.0 and it worked fine after that.
