Touchscreen

Hi,
what about for future to get a touchscreen? LCDs even IPS with touch sensors, at the small inches are cheap, HW to manage them as well no longer any expensive.
OK it would require a UI to get done, but that should be not a big deal either, so what do you thing when will we see a i3 touch upgratde?

Re: Touchscreen

Ahhh. Something else to take up processor time...

This little 16MHz processor has more than enough to do. OK, when the firmware is ported to more powerful processors, then OK, but at the moment, single byte/character displays are best and only one clickable button.

Re: Touchscreen

Get Raspberry, put touchscreen on it, make user frontend interface, connect MK2 via USB, get wireless with WiFi and you're done. 😉

Hint: you can contribute to OctoPiPanel project. https://github.com/jonaslorander/OctoPiPanel

Re: Touchscreen

if there is a 16Mhz CPU than sure no chance 🙂 and makes no sense
but for future a kit with own CPU and display, would be a nice add on, I think a lot of people would buy it, especialy like me the noobs 🙂
Arduino, Rasbery, or even LattePanda are options for sure especialy the Panda with Win10, would be good, but its too much time for me to set up, it still would not be a dedicated solution, so not perfectly optimized, I would rather be looking for a complete panel with cover, just to take out the diplay now, change it for new, swap cables and done.
Thou I like DIY, otherwise I would not buy this machine 😀 I dont have the time much to tweak solutions. So just saying a touchscreen would be nice, and any way that is where the market will go, I'm quite sure of that.

Re: Touchscreen

Personally, I'd just go with a Raspberry Pi (or clone) + octoprint and perhaps a touchscreen-friendly plugin (imo the webif is fairly mobile/touch friendly as-is), or a raspi+touchscreen and Printrun/Pronterface.

But in theory, it's possible, as people have already implemented touchscreens with the Arduino platform. But alas, would a mini Rambo be able to handle the increased resource footprint? The implementation I linked already needs an Arduino Mega 2560, (which uses an Atmega2560, just like the mini Rambo), without needing to worry about accurately controlling stepper motors and measuring thermistor values.

You don't need to invent a wheel.
But the outcomes can be interesting and somewhat diverse 😀
