Scale under heatbed to monitor where plastic is going

Just an idéa, what if the 3d printers had a scale (as in weighing what and if something is on the bed) sort of deal under the headbed, that monitors if the plastic is actually being placed on the heatbed. In that way it can detect if the filamnet is getting stuck to the hotend or is being placed on the bed?

What is your tought?

Scales work by measuring compression. In the simple case it is a spring and it measures how much the spring moves. Piezos are the same concept.

In general you don't want your bed to move. Even a little bit. That would affect layer adhesions and a whole host of issues.

I suppose you could weight the WHOLE machine - and have the spool mounted separately (not on the machine) but a tumor on the hotend would still "register" as added weight.

Interesting idea, just not sure it would work well.

but a successful printed part will add the weight as well. how should the printer differentiate if the filament is printed ok at the heatbed or if it's just a big blob underneath the hotend ?
wheighing the whole printer doesn't help.... even if the filament spool is seperated.

Yes. That was my point. It would detect a jam, but not a tumor.

I'm afraid that such a precise weight will be a challenge. Especially for such a large temperature range (weighing is strongly dependent on temperature).

Better solution will be a webcam with machine vision or image processing (OpenVC, ...) which can supervise proper model print.

How about some kind of camera with built-in scanner like on the Xbox Kinect it is pointed to the work surface either straight down or the whole bed area and periodically its checks with its stl code and model on which line or layer it's at, similar as a closed loop stepper motor but obviously with algorithms instead? (it's keeping an eye on itself?) in a matter of speaking
