My enhancements on Thingiverse: 3-point Y-motor holder, spool holder and igus bushing clips,
Hi all,
just wanted to let you now, that I have now three enhancements for the Original Prusa i3 MK2 ready on Thingiverse for you to try out.
I use them myself on both machines I own and I find them quite useful.
1. The three point Y stepper motor holder, that can be used either with the bare motor or in combination with a vibration damper:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1837853
2. A tool-free "top on" spool holder, that is easily adjustable for different spool gauges and offers several other features, like idle filament brackets:

3. Y-carriage igus drylin RJZM-01-08 bushing clips:

Please tell me what you think and what I can improve even more.
More parts and enhancements are in the works and will follow as soon as I have them polished.
Check also my YouTube channel, where I present my creations and show you how to assemble them:

Thank you for sharing. What's the X-clamp (?) I see in the picture of the Y-carriage bushing clips though?

Very nice, and professionally presented!
Re: My enhancements on Thingiverse: 3-point Y-motor holder, spool holder and igus bushing clips,

This is a frame / square to keep the 10M rods parallel aligned and to mark roughly where the front nut for the X-Z-Frame should be placed. I printed it on my first MK2, after I was fiddling around with the Y-frame assembly of this first machine for hours to make it perfectly square. 😥
It was sooo much easier to assemble the second MK2 with it. So it is mostly for assemble purposes. But as it looks quite nicely imho I kept it on the machine. The rod-clips are strong enough to hold the square tightly and it helps keeping the machine square during transportation. 🙂
To be honest, I found a similar square on Thingiverse. It was my inspiration, but the model was not very precise and looked clunky. 😉

Re: My enhancements on Thingiverse: 3-point Y-motor holder, spool holder and igus bushing clips,
Any chance you would be willing to share the x-brace and the camera brace as well? They are my favorite designs so far!

Cool and an admirably simple solution. Would you care to share that frame on Thingiverse as well? I reckon it could come in handy when replacing the stock Y motor holder with a 3-point one.
Re: My enhancements on Thingiverse: 3-point Y-motor holder, spool holder and igus bushing clips,
How is the igus bearing doing ? is it really quieter ?
Do you have any dB meter (or mobile app dB meter) for analysis ?
I have plan to change out my lmuu8, just wondering if Misumi or Igus is next .... 😀
Many thanks for the posting 😀
Re: My enhancements on Thingiverse: 3-point Y-motor holder, spool holder and igus bushing clips,
Okay, the square helper aka. X brace is now online on Thingiverse:

The camera brace is an early work in progress. The camera is not able to be tilted right now and I haven't put much thoughts on a better ribbon cable management (maybe I simply need a longer ribbon cable 🙄 ).
So if I find the time to finish this design, I will publish it.

Nope, no dB meter at hand.
But from a pure subjective standpointL: Yes it is much quieter now.
In fact, the cooling fans are much much much louder than the movements now (except you run the stepper at full speed and acceleration, but thats a stepper problem and not one of the linear motion system).
I have the printers standing 1.5 meters behind me and if I press print over the OctoPi web interface, I have to take a look if the printers are actually doing something or just standing there and keeping the fans on because of preheating.
One of the printers has a 24V cooling fan installed, because the 12V fan was broken on delivery - makes no problems so far. Running at half the speed makes it a lot quieter, so that it is now a living-room capable machine. I will replace the fans with some quieter ones in the future for sure.

For the Camera mount, I'd suggest making the tilt GoPro camera mount compatible. For the swivel, it shouldn't be too hard to make a peg that can snap into a base. As for longer camera cable, Adafruit sells them in various different lengths.

I have installed SKF LBBR bearings and they don't really rattle as far as I've noticed. I don't want to go to Drylin just because the SKF should last longer than Drylin. I opted not to replace the Linear rods. I do like having the Noctura 40mm fan mounted to my hotend. I put in NEMA dampers on the X and Y axis. My printer is pretty much whisper quiet now.
and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

Nice mods! Thanks for sharing
A question if I may: Are you using you using the RJZM bearings on all axes or just the bed?

Currently just the bed. This is because the slightly wider RJZM bearings do not fit into the X carriage well enough. They bend the structure and are completely out of level with the shafts. If I find the time I will adjust the x carriage shaft mounting plate to fit.
Off topic: Sooo many projects, sooo little time. I am currently writing my master's thesis, too. All the mods come from making the two Prusa i3 MK2 ready for my thesis topic. One printer is for structural printing, the other for functional (electric) printing. But I still miss the most important part to make the whole story less painful: The Quad Material upgrade... Can't wait to get my hands on it. Sadly Prusa Research does not react to my beta application for the upgrade. 😥

More bearing / bushing clips are in the making. Soon I will get the standard lm8uu bearings covered and then also the LBBR8 (sadly I have none of the latter, so I will have to "gauge" it from the schematics).
I do like having the Noctura 40mm fan mounted to my hotend.
I like this mod a lot! 40 mm fans are sooo much quieter that this little 30 mm noisy troublemaker...

Thanks for the confirmation, i guess i'll go to RJ4JP for the x-axis then. I got the RJZM on the bed and love them but wasn't sure about X.

You're welcome! But I don't know if the bare drylin bearings are a good choice. They also meant to be tightly enclosed by a shell, so that they don't deform. But you can give them a try for sure. Please report back, if they perform well and if you see any wear off after a longer period.

Which one did you choose? LBBR 8-2LS or LBBR 8-2LS/HV6?
I'm just in the stage of building my first MK2 (80% finished) but already thinking about shifting in the near future to new linear bearings and rods as well as either galvanized or stainless threaded bars. 😎

I went with the non HV6.

Most Drylin bearings are designed for a press-fit enclosure, but this particular model is a much stiffer plastic that works fine as a drop-in replacement for the LM8UU.

Re: My enhancements on Thingiverse: 3-point Y-motor holder, spool holder and igus bushing clips,
Hi Martin,
Will the spool holder clear the extruder cable chains?
Just making sure before printing.
Thanks,
Madhu.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by that. If you're asking if the cables jam somehow into the holder, than no! As you can see in my YouTube video at about 0:24 - - there is no interference between the spool holder and the extruder carriage nor its cables. I designed it so, that you can even print at the highest Z position that is possible on the MK2.

What I mean is, I am currently using this: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/improvements-f14/mk2-cable-chains-t1538.html
What is the clearance above the Z frame to the lowest point on the spool holder?
Thanks,
Madhu.
