MK3 MMU?
For the MMU for the MK3 I was hoping to see the direct drive motor left on the extruder body and the other motors used to feed the filament to it for loading, this should be easy now that the MK3 has a filament sensor and would surely get rid of a lot of the problems people report with the MMU would it not? Direct drive seems to work better than Bowden from what I read. Also this would surely allow them to reduce the waste that is purged as they will know exactly how much filament is flowing?
I was disappointed to see the preorder for it go up and it's just the old version with filament sensors and BondTech gears...

If you search for MK3 MMU there are several posts already. They've moved the delivery from early Feb 2018 to May and is why I canceled my order. Few people think there will be a substantial difference between the current MMU and the one for the MK3.

I did a search and couldn't come up with where the MMU upgrades had been pushed back to May, except for new orders. Did I miss something?
MK3 ordered together with Multi Material upgrades start shipping early March 2018, majority in March and April.
New MMU for MK3 orders - separate and combined both - at the beginning of May 2018.

Colin, have they posted yet what the MMU for the MK3 will be? Is it just modified for the MK3 physical differences or is there actually a difference and better product?

As far as I know the only difference is the addition of filament sensors (the MK2 MMU comes with Bondtech gears already).

There are some problem with that: the filament need to cool and harden before going again into the bondtech gears. But in the mmu, the filament is cooling in the cooling tube. So, to make it work, you may have to let the filament cool in the ptfe, inside the heatsink. If so:
1- you have to change the slic3r gcode (hard coded for now)
2- it will slow the print even more.
3- i don't think it will solve the clogs problems (it's a heatbreak size & pfte size problem). But it can enable you to print with flexible.

Interestingly, Prusa just announced that the MMU 2.0 will be hybrid - one motor to feed one of multiple filaments to the extruder, and a direct drive extruder. I'm hopeful that it eliminates the 'Y' that seemed to produce problems, and will work with TPU. Fingers crossed!

Removes the Y splitter from the old multimaterial where many people experienced jams.
Given that the blog post this information comes from literally mentions that, I think you can rest assured that it does.

The amount of purge required probably won't change, but the new software to use infill for purge will make a difference.
But that feature should be available to old MMU1 upgrades, since it's a software thing.

I am psyched about the MMU 2.0. It's not only direct drive, which means it'll work with TPU and other soft filaments, but it's only got two motors, so it's both lower cost and able to support more materials!
And using infill as 'purge' is brilliant! Since infill has to be printed, and nobody cares what color it is, it's a great way to purge old colors. Though you may still need an external purge if there's not enough infill on a given layer.

Two at the top left and right (position to filament? + load/unload filament?)
One on the extruder (print)
But, then, who is counting as long as it works and is here in 2018! 😉

Sure, but the extruder motor is already there, right. So, I suppose I should be more precise - the MMU 2.0 adds only two motors, while the MMU added 3 (plus you had to move the extruder motor to drive the fourth color of filament).
And I am with you - as long as it works and arrives this year, I'm happy!
