Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
I’ve got something for all the Prusa i3 owners out there. It’s a new improved spool holder to replace the one that came with your Prusa versions Mk1 to Mk2S. I’ve done away with having to detach the arms each time you change a spool and I made the arms attach much more securely. In this design I’ve incorporated a removable spool spindle out of the cheap and common old PVC tube in the 20mm or ¾ inch diameter.
This design is freely available at thingiverse here:-

I made a short video to show how it works here:-
You can print this in good old PLA at 0.15 or 0.20mm layer height and you won’t need to use supports. If you intend on having a heated chamber then choose instead PETG or ABS as PLA will deform at around 55 Celsius. This was printed with 4 perimeters and 15% fill though I think 3 perimeters and 10% fill is still more than enough.
I cut my spindle at 22.5cm. I use a pipe cutter because it’s very neat but pruning secateurs or a hacksaw will also do the job.
When attaching the arms you’ll just need to push them down while wiggling them a little to get them in position before levering them gently until they snap securely onto the frame. Once both arms are on take your spindle and put a filament spool on it and simply let the spindle slot in securely with a reassuring snap!
I also made a spindle that has 608 skate bearings on the ends but to be honest this is overkill and the standard PVC tube is just as good for most uses.

Re: Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
nice work scotty...
quite similar to the holder i use. but instead of a cheap, standard pvc-tube i've used a piece of an old broomstick

Re: Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
Great job, simple and effective...on a side note, where did you get you camera mount. I printed one but mounts to other side and annoys me since close to the selection knob. Thanks again for sharing your design.
Re: Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
Thanks Jeff and Matt,
Matt, I remixed another design to get just the right camera position so as to not interfere with anything. When I get home I'll post it here.

Re: Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
I like to use this one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1777780 - It is sturdy, and makes replacing the spool very easy.
Speaking of spool holders, there's a filament feeder that I've designed in order to prevent filament from tangling around the holder. It maintains slight tension of the filament, preventing it to unwind uncontrollably. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2372674
Re: Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
Thanks for the camera holder. I printed the spool holder and it works great. Not sure if you meant for this, but your logo is on the inside of the holder now. On thingiverse your pictures of you holder have it on the outside, but the 3d images show it on the inside, which is how it prints. Either way, love the design and seem very stable.
Re: Improved Prusa i3 Spool Holder
Thanks Matt, great to hear you're happy with it!
Yes, the logo change was a design change I made since I made that original print.
