enclosure usage

😎 hi guys and girls (i know that there are some around here) 😛

if you've put your printer inside a box or an enclosure, which temperatures do you reach inside, when printing abs ❓
and: when you print abs inside the enclosure, do you use the print fan then (to manage bridging with abs) ❓

➡ and some further aspects:
i saw different designs of enclosures, some of them with vents to avoid overheating (at rambo and/or psu side), others completely closed.
as far as i understood, the steppers and the rambo won't like temperatures above 60°C.

💡 any "enclosure field report" about the temperatures inside, and the usage while printing challenging filaments would be useful...

Re: enclosure usage

Hi,

for now mine reach and stay around 30~35 °C, but the back face is not fully closed, I didn't had yet the time to finish it.

I've seen some report that a fully closed Lack-type enclosure stay around 40 °C when close, which seems hot enough and cold enough to keep electronic safe. But I'm really curious to see others opinion on that.

I'm like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

Re: enclosure usage

I've got a decent Lack enclosure. I'll post pictures something this weekend, maybe.

The longest ABS print I've done was around 45 minutes. My temperature gauge said it was around 36c inside.

That's not very scientific, but it's a data point.

Re: enclosure usage

I never use the print fan (the frontal one) during ABS printing, excepted at very low level for small layers, like pikes on top of model .

thanks for the info.
i'm asking because when you try to print shallow overhangs without support structure with abs and without fan, you'll end up in a mess like this.

i guess a "hot fan" @ about 100°C might solve several problems while printing overhangs with abs. i didn't reach that temperature with my oven approach (described at the posting above), but it was a big step forward for me 🙄 .

Re: enclosure usage

My box has a fair amount of ventilation holes towards the top of the side walls and an air duct where the power supply is located. It's meant to shield against drafts and cut down on dust, but allow for hot air to rise out of the box.

Temperature rises usually +5°C above room temp (25-28°C) .

I do not print ABS, i am "allergic" to the smell of ABS

Re: enclosure usage

Well my Prusa hasnt yet arrived but I can offer a unique take on enclosures.
I have my printer setup in a near sealed enclosure that I typically hold at 35C. The unit is setup to suck the fumes through a high grade furnace filter at the top and a hydroponics carbon filter on the side. The air is the recirculated beneath the subfloor where it is heated by a reptile heat lamp controlled by a thermostat. The hot air is then pushed into the main chamber vertically by 3 fans.

Note electronics and power supplies do not like high temp so I created an air intake that directly pushes cold air into the PCB and power supply. I will do the same with my Prusa.

Note this enclosure serves two purposes: temperature stability and fume reduction

I am very passionate about not killing myself 3D printing. Since I use ABS and rubbers I thought it prudent to have some type of filtration in place. The system works well and you would never know by the smell that I was 3D printing.

@john: very interesting approach. seems that you've got experience with terrariums.
thanks for that post !

about the printing of abs: did you use the print fan ? or isn't there any at the wanhao ?

For layer 1-2 I use 0% fan. For 3+ I use the fan at 20%. This is for printing without a raft. I do not use raft as I can get adhesion to the Kapton tape that is stronger than the bond between raft and print.
