I think for most users they will last quite a long time. You are a special case in that you print with extremely high temp stuff and it will degrade the silicon faster.

I only print at 230C using PLA now, but the silicone socks still pale and become brittle after a few weeks or months. No big issue, but considering that some silicone seals are rated for 800C, it could probably be improved.

Were any modifications required to make the sock fit?

I just received mine and it looked to me as if the sock wont go on easily do part of the extruder holder being in the way.

The sock fits without any mods. Best to disassemble part of the extruder - remove both tans and front extruder body (9 screws, I think) so the extruder is loose, then fit the sock and put everything back together.

I tend to change the sock when I change the nozzle.
