While I love the idea of a quick-release Hot/cold end that 'thing' is way to heavy and bulky, the entire extruder system needs to be as small and light as possible to avoid problems, especially at higher speeds.

The idea that you could say un-click a single extruder and click in a double one sounds wonderful...

Hummm...

That looks very interesting. And just because it looks heavy doesn't mean it is. Being geared, it has a smaller motor to start with (NEMA 14) which would reduce the motor weight by around 40%.

There is weight-saving elsewhere as well (eg part fan).

Personally, I like the idea of geared extruders; they can increase the feed accuracy quite significantly, although you can't print as fast with them.

Geared extruders look awesome too 😉

I guess as long as you have a leadscrew motor with a high holding torque you can run a heavier extruder.

No. When microstepping, stepper motors holding torque is not great.

But it's all about acceleration and mass. Increase the weight (mass) and you reduce the rate at which acceleration can occur given the same available motor power.

The firmware has values for maximum acceleration in each of XY/Z/E axes and (subject to the Jerk value) works out what it believes is the acceleration to apply to each axis and generates the steps accordingly. If there is too much mass to achieve the programmed acceleration then steps will be skipped.
