Best $7 buck improvement you can make

16 inch stone paver, about 4 bucks
4 big rubber feet, about 3 bucks

Noise, down about 80%
Prints, noticable better

I am completely with you, that is absolutely no noise at all. I guess it is silence mode tho, right?

Mine sits on feet I made from Semi-Flex and then on my granite counter top and it is silent also. So great idea with the paver.

Too cool. I have 6 of those pavers under my workbench (we were forced to remove some by our condo association). Thank you for posting this. It will be happening here too.

It's a great tip!

How heavy is the paver block? In metric it's about 40.64 cm x 40.64 cm x 5 cm.

I was wondering, there's a USB cable running from the Rambo card to something hidden behind the frame of the Prusa. Is it some kind of networked repeater to command the printer ?

Looks to be a Raspberry Pi. It is used to control the printer instead of having it connected to a PC or having to use the SD card to shuttle gcode back and forth to print.

That looks mighty cool!
I'm wondering though, how heavy is a typical paver? I'm planning on building a LACK enclosure, and I'm not sure how well the paper honeycomb inside will handle the weight...

My paver is listed online as 40 pounds (18.14 kg). I have it on a giant mouse pad that I was already using under the printer. I am not in low power mode, but it is significantly quieter. I can be in the same room without any real issues. It sounds about as loud as you would expect a printer to now. My Y axis is still the noise maker.

I bought a granite plate under five dollar.
Dimension of the granite plate: 400x400x30 mm

It really reduces vibration and noise of the printer. 😀

I can't compare but I am quite happy with these isolation feet: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2205774 You can use some HIFI absorbers which are about 10 EUR on amazon. Works nice and no wobbling . 🙂

That is a great idea, the noise in the evenings drives my wife crazy even though it is in the garage. I just cut up a spare mouse mat and found a left over large floor tile and it has made a huge reduction in noise.

+1 for the paver idea. Got the same 16x16 paver at Home Depot (listed at 37lbs) with 4 felt-padded feet (2-inch dia) and the printer is much, much quieter! I did build my MK2S kit with DryLin bearings on X & Y.

I'm typing this downstairs and the printer is upstairs in a bedroom with the door open.

I did the same thing with a slab of granite that had been cut out from a sink when the prior owner of my house was renovating a bathroom, I think.

I had originally been running it on the island in my kitchen, and discovered the same thing -- it was SO much louder on any other surface that wasn't high-mass like that. A few 2" felt feet on the bottom of the granite, and its quiet pretty much anywhere I put it now.

Bought the concrete, but they didn't have rubber feet. Only the cheap stuff that is for the feet of chairs so they glide better (white felt stuff) or a thick EVA foam mat. Is any of those two things good? I'm not into the physics of vibrations :/

It's all about decreasing that resonance that gets passed to your surface. A sturdy piece of furniture works the same way.

Has anyone tried bolting to the printer to the paver, to secure it more tightly? Does this make noise/vibration better, worse, or no different?

Don't know if it would change the noise/vibration characteristics but it sure would make it much harder to perform maintenance or troubleshoot problems.
