Weird printing error on MK3S (vase)

Hello,

I printed a small vase overnight and overall it turned out well, however, I cannot figure out why these two artifacts started appearing on the back of the print. It actually looks like burns if you ask me although this would not make a lot of sense.

Have you seen something like this before?

My specs are:

  • 195° C / 60° C
  • PLA Vanilla White (Prusament)
  • 0.15 mm layer height
  • 25 mm/s overall print speed
  • 15% fill rate
  • Seam set to random (if that makes any difference)
  • No supports
  • 0.8 mm retraction, 0.6 mm Z lift

Thank you!

They look to be standard airflow anomalies:  when air flow and overhang conspire to mess up a print. Reducing layer height is about the best way to deal with it.

Hi Tim,

Thank you. You are referring to the airflow caused by the fan as well as the extruder movements, right?

Would reducing the fan speed or increasing the fill rate up to 100% make a difference?

The only thing I've found that reliably helps is increasing layer resolution (reduce layer height).

My guess is that cooling fan airflow disrupts the extrusion at some angles due to thermal properties of the plastic, so the overhang isn't consistent layer to layer at some overhangs angles.  You can try slowing down perimeter speeds, adding perimeters, reducing fan speeds.  I haven't focused on the issue enough to have a specific cure other than layer height.

@tim-m30

Thank you, I'll look into this and report back when I find something.

Hello Tim,

The issue at hand turned out to be more complex than I had expected. First off, it did have to do with thermal anomalies like you mentioned.

I took apart the extruder just to see if any way looking suspicious. In fact it did (see picture) and I had to replace it. I believe this could have contributed to the problem by changing the airflow and redirecting hot air towards my part.

Second, I found this post here and consequently made a few changes:

  • I removed my enclosure altogether (previously I had only the door opened).
  • I cooled down the ambient temperature by opening a window.
  • I reduced the print temperature to 190° C and bed temperature to 40° C.
  • I set the print speed to 25 mm/s
  • I also chose to go forward with 4 lines for my vertical walls
  • Layer height was 0.15 mm

In fact that resolved the issue and I no longer see artifacts of any kind. According to the post increasing the layer height helps in fact and this is what I can confirm as well looking at my previous trials.

Just to close this thread and hopefully help someone else in the future. It's been a great learning experience. Thank you, Tim, for pointing me in the right direction!

Glad you found something.   Be sure you change to the R5 (or later) extruder parts; they are supposed to help with melting/droop of the PINDA.

Printing thicker layers to combat the issue is counter intuitive ... I'll need to try that once my current projects are complete. Especially where thin layers are needed to maintain detail and accuracy.   As for fan, I was running at 100% already, slowing it helped in my case.  Slower speeds, and hell thickness, are what I suspect helps most, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for getting back here and posting your results.

Yes, counter-intuitive was the word that came to my mind when I read the post concerning the layer height. Since I changed a number of parameters, I cannot exactly boil it down to the layer height per se, but I will try again in the next few days and reduce it to 0.1 mm just for the fun of it.

Would be great if you posted your results as well. This way we keep this thread alive for others to learn something from our painful experiences. 😀
