[Risolto] Unwanted infill

Unwanted infill

Hi all!

I'm trying to print a roof to a birdhouse and the problem is that the angled roof gets infill by the slicer. How can I get rid of that? The roof is created as a ruled surface in Freecad

Turning support on and off doesn't matter.  Played with slicer settings, but can't find any solution.

Finally I think I got what you wanted. I hope, I 😀 hope.

I broke up your object into 2 parts. 1 for the sloped part and 2 for the flat part. I imported part 1 into Prusaslicer and then I added part 2 through the Add part menu option when right clicking on part 1. I then set the required infill and top and bottom layers for each part.

I did take some liberty with the flat part. Actually I rebuilt it from scratch, so it might not do exactly what you want. slope?

but it does slice with no infill under slope and 15%, with top and bottom layers for flat part. You should be able to take it from here. I would look at re-enforcing where the two meet.

The key to everything was trying to understand the problem first and then to figure out a solution. There myay other solutions, but the important thing is to keep moving forward.

Splitting up object into parts allowed me to manipulate each one separately. Might even make it possible to print in two colours. That is for MMU guys and gals to determine.

Set your infill to 0% or use concentric as your infill.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

Yes setting the infill to 0 removes the infill inside the roof, but also in the walls as I understand it. And the first layers are still there on the whole bottom

It's beginning to sound like the model is incorrect.

Even if you used enforcers to cut out the middle, you will still have the first layer, which is there because it is in the original .stl

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I can look into the model from below before slicing. Maybe ruled surface is wrong way to do it? See if I can find another way.

Post your project here (save project as) will save it as a 3mf with the model and all your settings.  Zip it up and post it.  That way people can examine both the settings and the model.

There are MANY many many models that look ok from the plater but are in fact broken when it comes to generating a proper 3d slice that can be printed.

I have a couple of observations and questions about your model if you don't mind?

It loaded into Prusaslicer without any errors, so I cannot say what errors you saw.

Once loaded I noticed that there were 4 planes on the bottom that I could snap to the bed. I also noticed that the bottom of the sloped roof started about 5 layers up.

I think that the flat piece is supposed to be an open top tray, but I am not sure. My CAD software automatically filled it in.

Is the bottom of the sloped roof supposed to align with the bottom of the flat piece or the top or somewhere in between? My CAD software shows it in between at an angle from one side to the other.

Fixable? Sure, but more details would be needed for me.

Reminds me, I need a new roof for one of my bird feeders.

Its manifold and no errors on mine too but running it through netfabb fills it in too si it doesnt really know how to handle it either.  

Just by looking at it when loaded you can tell its not going to print though, as I noticed the same as Kennd, the 'roof' isnt on the bed and it looks like its a single plane, ie no thickness to it.  Unfortunately obj is not a format I'm used to and Blender isnt the best for that file format so i'll leave this one for Kennd 🙂

Sorry, the front shield was not aligned to the roof, is on this 3mf (bottom of both pieces should align). Yes open tray, to put on top of the bird house walls. So hopefully the sloped roof should now align to the bottom, but it doesn't help me

Ok. I was able to slice roof with no infill. Here is  quick .3mf file with just the roof, no shield/tray. I didn't spend a lot of time tweaking perimeters etc. Just got it to slice. Try it an let me know.

Is this your design?  I would like to modify it to replace one on one of my feeders.

My slicer keeps the infill from your .3mf . Standard filament and printer settings. And I'm not sure if the 3mf format keep all the settings, I have seen  in other prints that not all (printer) parameters are restored?

Yes it's my design, so please feel free. If you like I can send the other part (simple peace).

I downloaded OMV object module viewer and that display a wire frame without any roof base. So still lost

That 3mf file is much better. The slicer cannot see a perimeter where the roof and the flat piece meet on the bed ( if they do ), So it is treating the entire bottom as one and because you want infill for the flat piece it cannot tell where it is supposed to end.

Support enforcers may be one solution. But it will need some looking into.

What Slicer/version are you using. I just reloaded the one I posted and sliced it. No infill. You just loaded the 3mf and sliced? no changes?

enforcers not working. Still wants to put in a first layer. Time to see what CAD program sees.

I found one way with the bottom layer problem, Layers and perimeters / Horizontal Shells / Solid Layers / bottom = 0 fixed it (not printed yet)

But it requires 0 infill, and that will not work, the horizontal piece will be just a shell

I thought I was going crazy. Ignore his first 3mf file. The slicer cannot identify where the sloped roof ( requires zero infill )ends and the flat roof begins ( requires infill ). There is no perimeter that goes down to bed between the two.

Thanks, yes you're right, I was focused on solving the object as it was. And this is an eye opener for the slicer capabilities, easy to forget.

The roof is now in the printer:)
