Trying to print this in Paramount3D

Hi,

I've been struggling to get this hannibal mask to print successfully.  I'm using Paramount3d Army Green PETG.

Zip containing some images of the model and the .3mf

One of the images shows a japanese lucky kitty that I printed with this filament successfully.  it's the kitty on the right.   I've gone through several iterations in trying to print this mask.

I've back my extrusion multiplier down to .89.    I've reduced the max print speed to 35mm/s as well as setting retraction to 4mm and zLift to 2mm.  Things have improved, but it still ends up stringing and eventually building up enough that it triggers crash detection at some point.  This seems to happen with anything I try to print that has a significant amount of support material.

I do have an MMU2S unit on order in hopes that some of the more complicated models can be printed using soluble supports but I think I still need to figure this issue out since even with soluble supports I'll end up printing at least the supports in the model material, just not the interface layers.

I'm curious if I'm looking at the wrong setting or something else.

Thanks!

I also wanted to point out I've tried this in various orientations to control the amount of support material required.  I made some modifications to the original model which I found at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4281943

Thanks!

With some prints that require a high amount of support material and certain filaments, I have had to use hair spray to promote better adhesion.

@cwbullet

Adhesion is definitely not the issue.  first layers go down beautifully.  What I've started using for nearly everything, and have adjusted my zOffset for, is painter's tape + the glue stick.  Where the problem seems to happen is that even with my extrusion multiplier down to .89 and a zOffset of -.040 to -.043, the support material seems to get random places where the support material doesn't lay down cleanly and ends up up accumulating.  This was why I was slowly backing down the extrusion multiplier.  But I'm wondering if I should be looking at other settings, such as the thickness of the support material or interface material.   The zOffsets above seem right about the sweetspot for printing anything that's solid like the luck kitties.  I have 16 or 17 of those printed in each filament I've used just to be sure my settings are good.  This mask and a UH-1 helicopter model I've been trying to print are just requiring a lot more support material than I have been using up until now.   I've even got great printing using NinjaFlex  and PolyFlex at this point lol so this has been frustrating since it feels like I've stepped backwards lol.

@ssill2

Just keep tweaking you settings and processes.  Posting an image of where is it failing might help.

There were several images in the original zip I attached.  basically when looking at print horizontally, where it should be completely flat, there are wisps of filament sticking up.  If I let it go long enough these start to collect and have the makings of a petg booger.  This is the main reason I was backing down the extrusion multiplier and speed also.  I'll set it up to print again and attempt to take a picture of the profile while it's still in progress.  I'm just curious if taking the extrusion multiplier down that much is normal or if I should doing something like lowering the temp, etc.

Currently printing this again.  I made a couple more small tweaks:

zLift filament override set to 0, retraction still at 4mm

I also specified a non zero value(1000%) for the parameter to avoid crossing perimeters.

It LOOKS better at this stage, 10% into the print. but will no more in another hour or so.

27% in and everything looks good.  I'm fairly certain the zLift was was was doing it!  I'll let you know how it turns out

Charles means posting an Image here, and not a on a shared drive so we can see it. that can be done easily, as can posting a .3MF file zipped up for reference to your settings so we might be able to help. this is the preferred and accepted method

Here's another one.  this is somewhat moot now.  At 44% printing this again with Lift Z disabled and it appears to be working like a champ.  But attached is another pic of what it looked like.

Here's the zipped .3mf that appears to be working.  Thanks.

I'm printing this for one of my bosses lol.  I guess he figured it would discourage people from coming into his office. 🙂

And I already printed a bane mask( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4275954) for my direct boss lol

Thanks all for listening to me stumble through this.  I've only been 3d printing since november and I'm still learning.   When my MMU2S arrives that will be the start of a whole new learning curve.

@cwbullet

The same author does this mask

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4275874

and I wear that every time I go out lol.  I get tons of compliments on it.   I'm currently working in blender on a kylo ren mask that will fit that lafactoria3d base. I plan to use the MMU2S to print that with black and silver lol.
