Top layer bulging/flaring - 0.6mm nozzle

I recently started using a 0.6mm nozzle because I was having clogs with a 0.4mm nozzle when printing wood filament.  When running some test prints I noticed that the top layers are bulging/flaring out.  The print in the picture is supposed to have a flat sidewall.  I've tried adjusting the extrusion multiplier using the 40-40-40-cube printed in vase mode, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.  This happens with both the wood and regular PLA filament.  I'm using the built in Prusa 0.6mm nozzle printer settings and 0.2mm DETAIL print settings.  Any ideas?

You might try changing the upper ridge to be closer to the actual extrusion width.  With a 0.4 mm nozzle, at 2.0 mm, it will be tough to find a 0.45 mm divisor that works well.  Same would apply to a 0.6 mm nozzle: Try adjusting the lip to some even multiple of the perimeter width; or reduce or increase the perimeter width in Slicer to match the dimensions you want.

Suggestions:

  • Try simply slowing way down. Dial speed back to 50% mid-print using the front knob. 
  • Try adding a perimeter layer. More thickness will result in a more even wall surface. 
  • Thicker filaments won't extrude at the same rate as others. Very often you have to dial the Maximum volumetric speed setting down considerably to get good prints.

Provide a summary of your settings or (better) a 3MF project file with your part and settings (you need to zip the file before uploading) and more ideas are likely to be forthcoming. Also note what filament you're using.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a try.  When you say add a perimeter layer do you mean the setting under Layers and perimeters/Vertical shells/Perimeters?

I've attached my 3MF file.  I'm using Hatchbox wood pla.

It may be a day or two before I can really check this out. I've got some eSun wood PLA I can try it with. If somebody else doesn't give it a try, bump me back in a few days. In the meantime, try those settings I recommended and see if it improves.

Quick thought: Have you tried with non-filled PLA? Do you see the same bulges? Lesser bulges? That might give some hints.

Ah, that makes sense.  I changed the model to have a 2.6mm ridge and that resulted in a nice straight wall.  Thanks!!

Just out of curiosity did you measure the ridge in Prusa Slicer or did you extract the STL into another program?  I haven't seen any way to measure in Prusa Slicer.

I used Plicer ... but in a very convoluted way:  I added a part and resized it until it visually matched.  There are probably a lot of better ways to do that type of measurement.
