Tauntaun Chess Piece

I'm trying to print this tauntaun chess piece for my son for Christmas. Who ever designed the model has these godforsaken reigns that come around the head area. Unless I'm missing something, I'm guessing these will never print and/or break apart when removing the supports.

Is there a printing trick I don't know about that would make it work? And if not, is there an easy way to remove them in the slicer file? Thanks!

That piece looks like a nightmare to print.... if ever. A lot of very fine detail that need supports. Your assessment is correct.

Worse, there are over a thousand errors in the mesh.  Where did you get the model?  Whoever 'designed' it has no idea how to create a printable part. I'd guess this is some student project that has never been printed...

Better stick to Staunton if you're really into chess.

😂 I had to look up Staunton if that tells you anything. My fourteen year old son has taken a liking to chess recently. My ten year old daughter wanted to make him something special for Christmas and found the set on Thingaverse. They are an 8th grade (I think) class project. A few of the pieces are actually pretty good, but then there are the disasters like this. If anything this project in itself is a master class for me in using PrusaSlicer. 😂

Not one to step down from a challenge and I didn’t want to disappoint my daughter, I’ve been figuring things out as I go, learning something new with each print. And using lots of superglue along they way. 🙄

I’ actually figured this one out yesterday, using negative shapes for the obvious stuff and ignoring and clipping things like the ears.

Generally serious players dislike fancy chess sets.  What they want is a standard contest approved design - Staunton is one, with a nice heavy base and a soft, felt, bottom.

There are several on printables, here are two that seem to have been uploaded by serious players.  Carefuly printed, weighted and felted they will be at least as good as anything available short of hand crafted wood - print an extra queen of each colour for promotion and you will have something a master would be happy to use.
