Switching gcode mid print

Recently I had a print job with meshmixer tree support and the support broke off mid print. I had to stop the print, save the z height, cut the stl, print the last portion and glue them together. Surely it would have looked better had I been able to pause the print and switch the gcode using one without the support. Can someone please enlighten me on how one can switch gcode during a pause?

Unless you are an exceedingly good gcode programmer, forget it.

RE: Switching gcode mid print

I just successfully swapped gcode mid-print last night by intentionally pulling the plug, swapping the code and simply plugging it back in to let it go into print recovery. I had a 10hr print on. About 3 hours into the print, I glanced at my computer screen where Prusa Slicer was still open, and noticed I had missed a necessary change to the top surface detail of the print. I wanted to change something about the top of the print (which wouldn’t be reached until sometime in the last 1-2 hours of the print) without losing the first hours of the print. Willing to take a risk, I pulled the power plug on my MK3S+, made the change to the 3D model, in Prusa Slicer right-click>Reload from disk, re-saved over the original gcode file name on the original SD card, re-inserted the card, plugged the printer back in and it went through print recovery to pick up where it left off. I went to bed and the print was finished by morning looking exactly as I intended.

I don’t know if this would work in your specific case, but it worked in mine.

Compare the two files.  In your case I'm guessing they are vitually identical until after the point at which you paused, a much simpler change.

RE: Switching gcode mid print

@diem This entry is the first (and only seemingly relevant) google search result I could find when I wondered if what I intended to try would work in my case. OP posted over a year ago, so my response isn’t to help them, but rather to document my experience in a findable location in hopes it can help future searchers whose case is similar to what I experienced.
