Supports That Don't go all the way to the Print bed

With PrusaSlicer Is it possible to build supports that don't go all the way to the bed?

I have a 4mm overhang that goes all around my piece about 4 cm from the bed. Instead of building a 4 cm support that wraps around the whole thing can't i somehow have a support that bevels into the rising column to reduce print time and waste?

I have an MK3S.

Here's the profile:

Sorry if this is super simple to some.  My printer's only about a month old.

Not at this point. Maybe tree supports will be coming in the next release, which has a focus on supports.

Try @bobstro's settings for supports:

  • 0.25mm z distance.
  • 75% xy distance.
  • 3mm support spacing.
  • 4 interface layers.
  • 0.2mm interface layer spacing

Yes. Create the supports in CAD.

Try what I posted above and see if it works.

@tim-2

I dont' see a built in way to do this in fusion 360 and meshmixer attempts it but doesn't do a very good job.

@cwbullet

It did a pretty good job!  Seems like less waste and the supports came off nice.  Thanks!

@jimerb

You need to design the supports yourself in CAD. Add small features that will support corners and mid points of overhanging perimeters, use spacing as appropriate between the support and the overhang, or just let them touch. The diagonal supports must attach to the part, though. It's a choice of where the surface roughness matters most. Tree supports make the least impact, but are more difficult to control and build properly.

Agree with the above.  Just add a 45degree .5mm part that almost touches the outer part of your lip and almost touches the vertical wall (almost as in .2mm or less distance)  I have done this many times - it is a break away sacrificial part.

@jimerb

I am glad it helped.

How would it look in the profile I have?  The overhang goes all around the piece.    Since this is a large area I'd be supporting would i need a zillion little supports?  The supports would be "suspended in air" by just a little?

This is a worst case for supporting a flat surface using tree supports. But hopefully you can see how ends can be moved and tweaked to start from a single point to support many. This would include rooting on a vertical surface.
