I'm trying to print an object that has a wider angle coming off the print bed. I'm using support structure to assist with this print but it is not coming out cleanly. I've tried changing several of the settings and haven't had much improvement. I'm using ABS with a enclosure to print this. The rest of the print turns out great; I'm just having trouble with the areas where the support structure contacts the model. Any tips on how to get the angled edge of the print come out successfully? Thanks in advance!

hi Brice,
is the shape of the overhang critical?
you could add a sacrificial support, say 0.5 mm thick towards the face side and chamfer the back side at 45degrees then print without supports... cut the sacrificial wall off after the print completes
or add two sacrifical supports , say 0.5mm thick one towards the front edge and one towards the back edge of the overhang, this should force a short bridge between the two sacrificial walls,

cut the walls off after the print completes

Hi Joan,

Thank for your suggestions, but you completely lost me? The shape and angle of the overhand is critical for the application. I don't mind adding a sacrificial support, I'm just not sure where it would go or how it would help.

Are there any settings within Slic3r that would help alleviate the problem using the integrated supports?

Hi Brice,

imagine the image below shows the sort of overhang you are trying to print,

to the left hand side, I have modeled a single sacrificial wall, in line with the outer surface of the model, and because the inner surface is not directly supported, I have used a 45 degree chamfer, to prevent the plastic drooping.

this may be ok, if only the outside is visible in the final product

to the right hand side, I have modelled a double sacrificial wall, the red lines again estimate the cut off portion.

this would rely upon a short bridge between the two sacrificial walls, to prevent the final surface from drooping

this is another model I used sacrificial supports on.

the curved bottom was rubbish with traditional supports, and the tall model would over-stress the minuscule contact area as it got taller, so I added 4 braces, with minimal brace to model, contact area and large feet, to help brace the model, but provide simple removal in post processing

after printing, I trimmed the four landing legs and the two sacrificial walls off, and the model looked much better than it would have done on traditional supports

alternatively you could try tree supports in Meshmixer...
