Support layering?

I'm in the middle of printing a large mask for someone. So it's basically a large shell. I'm wondering if there's a way to to a gradual taper of supports. Maybe the geometry wouldn't work cleanly, but, for example, have an 10mm hex, and then a raft layer or three on top, followed by a 5mm hex, and getting finer as the height of the actual part is approached? I know folks are excited about tree supports for this reason, but I'm still not convinced when it comes to filament printing. (They make sense in a resin context, but that's a different context.)

I'm  currently doing 8mm hex, with support rings enabled on top, but we'll see how it all finishes up. It's already a 3 day print.

Adaptive Cubic infill might meet your requirements.

RE: Support layering?

Supports not infill Diem.  One common technique is to add an extra part to the object that takes up most of the area where support is needed and then set that specific part to use very few /single perimeter and little to no infill.  That way its a large mostly void area that the rest of the normal support can be placed on top of.

Used a lot for printing helmets.  An example.  Cylinder added -

Support placed on top of the cylinder

Top of the cylinder bridges and has a few top layers but it doesn't matter if it looks awful, just so long as it bridges.

Btw that example was done way before the new snug support options were added to slicer which is why its a bit excessive on the support expansion 🙂
