ridge in one layer only

ridge

See photo. Whenever I print this object, I get a ridge on a random layer. It doesn't extend for the full layer. As you can see, it joins the other layers about halfway along. Some more info:

1. Affects only one layer. That is, the ridge appears only once.

2. The layer affected varies.

3. I've tried changing my Live Z, from -1.25 to -1.7, in many steps, printing each one. At about -1.45 the print is greatly improved, in that the base is very smooth (much rougher at -1.25), but the ridge is still there.

4. It's not a layer shift, as the layers above and below the ridge are in the correct place.

5. Printer is calibrated, and the test reports that X-Y are correct and belt tension is in range.

Ideas?

Your print it pulling away from the bed because of material shrinkage its long and thin shape exacerbates this condition, this is called warping, you can possibly over come this with a brim and well tuned temperatures for bed, filament and cooling. Print speed can play a part as well.

Good Luck

YES!!!!

Thanks, Swiss_Cheese!

I added a giant brim, and that totally fixed the problem. Now that I know what's going on, I'm sure a much smaller brim will do the job as well.

Your welcome, and yep they could have saved the Titanic with that Brim 😉

I'm just guessing but probably a brim about 5mm would be more then enough. I can appreciate the better safe then sorry approach though.

Enjoy

bed temperature

For another experiment, I raised the bed temperature from 60 to 70 and printed with no brim. Clean print! Then, as a double-check, I printed again at 60 and the ridge was back.

So, two solutions: brim or increased bed temperature. Probably a higher bed temperature won't work on all objects, so I might in the future have to have a brim as well.

Thanks again, Swiss_Cheese!

You have concluded correctly, there is hope for you Sir. both are tools and not all tools work for all situations.

But all tools are good.

RE: ridge in one layer only

It may also help to sacrifice a goat in the name of the the Great Joe.... 😇

Seriously, often times 3D printing feels more like voodoo than science. There's just an ungodly amount of parameters and conditions that can be varied, and while often the results are predictable it never ceases to amaze me how how often they're not.
