Proto Pasta Candy Apple/Glitter Flake Jamming

Hey All!

I just received my MK2S to MK3 upgrade kit and now have it fully assembled. I have been having some issues though. Sometimes when I print something with Proto Pasta Glitter Flake or Candy Apple Red filament, it will jam about halfway through the print or just randomly. It happens even on the gcode that Prusa has provided in their drivers, so it's probably not my slicing. The filament worked perfectly on my MK2S, so I'm pretty positive that it's not that either. I don't see anything that is obviously wrong with my printer, but maybe I'm missing something.

I'd appreciate any help I could get, and feel free to ask for more info if you need to.

HI hanaleimason - did you ever get this resolved. I am getting the same results with the Galactic Empire Metallic Purple. I get random jams. Last night I was printing out a "marvin" and it almost finished.

Near the feet - i paused the print just to verify it was printing properly but the head is some crazy mess...

I can't really tell what's going on with the glitter flake print, but the other ones seem to be failing in areas that would trigger a large number of z-hops (and thus retractions).

What print settings are you using (specifically, nozzle temperature and retraction settings)?

Re: Proto Pasta Candy Apple/Glitter Flake Jamming

So I a messaged proto-pasta on twitter and got a lot of helpful responses. What I mainly focused on were the settings for retraction.

Here is what helped the most:

Nozzle Temp: 220 - which in my experience afterwards is too high. 205-210 seemed to work best on my MK3 other i tons of strings in the print.
Print Speed: 50mms
Retraction Distance: 1.10
Lift Z: 0.4
Retraction Speed: 45mms
Also turn off wipe during retraction

They also suggested using an "oiler" - since Proto-Pasta's HTPLA is not modified with lubricants. So a little may have helped too.

Attached are the results using an oiler, playing with the temp, and the above settings. Prints are actually Purple, lighting made them look blue. Hope this helps...

Lookin' good!

And yeah, I should have mentioned my settings in my reply! I've always had good results printing Proto-pasta HTPLA at 210°C (215°C on the first layer). Speeds are the same as the default PLA settings in Slic3rPE (45mm/s perimeters, 50mm/s top layer, 30mm/s first layer, 170mm/s infill). Retraction is 0.8mm at 35mm/s. I've had good luck (with Glitter Flake, Highfive Blue, and Silver Smoke) without using an oiler. Occasionally I'll get a few wisps, but those are easy to just pull off of the print. Bumping my retraction speed or distance up a tiny bit should eliminate that.
