Problem with 0.07 and 0.05

Hello!

My MK3 works great.
I print PLA and ABS with no issue at all, at 0.10/0.15/0.20.

But, when I print 0.07 and 0.05, my extruder start clicking after the 2nd or 3rd layer and stop extruding.

Right now, I'm launching a 0.07 PLA print with some tweaks on retract (for less retracting).
But if you have advice, let me know 🙂

First thing I'd try is slowing it down. Use the front knob and dial it way back to 50% or so. If that helps, it's probably something you can fix in slicer settings, most likely speed or max volumetric speed. Those are very thin layers, so it will be a bit tricky if you don't have things calibrated well. Have you calibrated your extrusion multiplier for the filaments you're trying?

Generally, thin layers cause additional back-pressure and any nozzle deficiency will cause what looks like a plug (and nozzle clicks). Also, any layer lifting, part warpage, etc., will jam the part into the nozzle - essentially acts just like a plugged nozzle.

A photo of the part when it fails will be very helpful.

Also - what filament are you using, and what are the last few filaments you have used?

Well yesterday after my 0.07 fail I had to desassembly the head, filament was blocked inside the ptfe tube and impossible to remove.
I think you are right about back pressure.
0.07 is too thin and the extruder extrude more than it need, but the nozzle won't let it pass so melted filament go back, get cooler and block everything.

Solution is, in my point of vue:
- don't touch extruder settings but speed up print, nozzle don't have time to back pressure, but higher speed kills the benefit of printing thinner
- reducing extruder speed to give the nozzle the time to do her job

2nd is far away the better solution, but I don't exactly know which parameter to tweak, and by how many? 🙁

EDIT: when it fails the print is ok, the printer continue printing, without any filament going out and the extruder click.

Printing faster won't help; but an easy place to try the notion is settings in LCD from 100% to 150%..

Maybe :
a/ use a high quality filament.
b/ calibrate the extruder ( https://www.rctruckstips.com/calibrer-son-extrudeur-pour-ameliorer-la-qualite-dimpression.html )
c/ increase the extrusion temperature to better fluidize the filament.
d/ I think that reducing speed will be more profitable. The printer calculates the volume of filament required according to the speed. Reducing it will reduce the volume of filament to be extruded.
