Print on existing object
Hi
is there a way to print on existing object?
Simple example.
You have a qube and you glue it to the steel plate. You can position extruder on e.g. top of the cube by manipulate axis from the menu.
And then i need to start print object from this setup position instead of steel plate. Is there a way to do something like this?
In theory, yes, in practice, it's horribly difficult... we are told the XL will be able to do this sort of thing but that doesn't help you right now.
What are you trying to do?
Cheerio,

Repair complicated plastic part by print on it without glue.
And learn something new 🙂
OK, you have to get the upper surface of the part to be repaired absolutely horizontal and then, effectively, calibrate your first layer Z offset to the top of the part within 0.2mm ...
Better to print the new section on it's own and break out the glue - or reprint the whole thing.

This is a big problem, but let's assume that i succesfully do this 😉
Is there a way to print on shifted position?
You would have to modify the start of your gcode to skip the usual levelling and insert, probably, a G92 code to start from a higher plane but this is trivial compared to the difficulty of aligning the model and fixing it to sub millimetre precision.
Or I might pre-level the printer, M601 pause, install the damaged model and then M602 resume.
Frankly, if you need to ask these questions you shouldn't attempt it.
Cheerio.
RE:
To add to Diems observations, you might consider the number of post concerning poor first layer adhesion.
RE: Print on existing object
I can add gcode but i don't know if "g codes" in letter print of model are not positioned?
Shouldn't they be shifted too?
RE:
I haven't done this myself, so there may be other considerations I haven't thought of, but this might get you started. There is a neat trick in the Prusaslicer for raising your item to the layer height that you need (and you would also need to comment out the bed mesh leveling and print without a skirt).
In the slicer, if you try to lift an object up to a higher layer height, it will drop to the floor. A way to get around this is to start with a small OBJECT that you can put on the floor but outside of the area where your previous print is. Then add your model that you want to print on top of the other print to this small object as a PART and then you can raise it to the layer height you want.
I would look closely in the slicer at the preview where you can watch the movement of the nozzle and run some tests before trying to print this. You don't want your printhead to smash into your previous object and damage your printer.

RE: Print on existing object
I see that saved .gcode file contain
G90 ; use absolute coordinates
do someone know if i can change it to use offsets instead in prusa slicer?
RE:
I suppose that best answer to this is :
Do not try this, maybe in new XL it will be possible.
Even with calipers it is terrible difficult to have object horizontal. So i do not risk to try.
Thanks to everyone for your time
RE:
Very wise.

Heloo,
@honzajaros can you share your settings for this topic in Prusaslicer. Also for Prusa Mini setup. Of curse if it is possible.
