Re: poor print quality

BUT I see the "ringing" only on the X axis, not on Y

I wonder if I swap the X and Y cables if I can reproduce the "ringing" on Y, I may try when I get home.

If you get any interesting results, I have a Github issue open here if you'd like to add details: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/428

swapping X and Z wont work as auto home wont find Z position, maybe at the beginning, after home and after pausing the printer

after swapping X and Y after print pause I get same "ringing" on X, I dont know why I thought this will make any difference.

It must be mechanical, vibrations from rod/bushings plus high jerk(?)

Hmm, just out of curiosity, are you using a spool holder other than what came with the printer? I am using one from thingiverse that is really nice ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1832235 ), but the spool hangs way off the back compared to the included spool holder. Making me wonder if it's getting better leverage on the frame and causing enough wobble to translate into these ripples we're seeing.

Coming up with a way to get my spool off the machine and see if that makes a difference.

Re: poor print quality

The constant ringing has nothing to do with bearings or rails, its all about the stepper driver's timing that cause this effect. It can be reduced with firmware updates, but it will never completely go away. :geek:

Check out this mount ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2727093 ) The spool itself would sit on the table.

Thanks,

Awesome, hadn't seen that one before and I have just the bearing for it. I really like my current spool holders mounted on the Prusa, so I had the idea to design an off printer holder for prusa accessories:

It's printing now, hoping to transfer my existing holder onto it after and then print up the guide you just suggested. 🙂

Very nice idea, that I also considered! Would like to see pictures and especially a report on how it works! Do you put it onto an enclosure? Or next to the printer?

so basically it means that the Trinamic's with current FW settings are worst that "old" MK2S stepper drivers?

yes, original MK3 spool holder, will try later today w/o any spool holder.

Didn't have time to test it, but the plan is to have it to the side of the printer. Made it pretty big, wanted to be able to set the holders wide. I could have printed some spool skates, but I like the idea that any accessories that fit the Prusa will fit on this as well:

Will post results on if it helps the ringing issue after work. 🙂

Re: poor print quality

I held the spool in my hand for a small print. It did NOT help much with the ringing:-)

Sad to hear. My biggest improvement thus far was IGUS bearings and slower ext perimeter speed (15mm/s or so). 🙁

Re: poor print quality

printed w/o spoolholder and 3 external perimeter 30mm/s
on Y there no ringing (or whatever we can call it)
both printed at once one of them rotated 90 degree

Re: poor print quality

here my latest take on the problem by just playing with Slic3r PE settings:
Silver Prusa PLA
Layer height 0.2mm
3 perimeters
4 Top/Bottom Layers
External perimeters first

Speed:
Perimeters: 60mm/s
Small Perimeters: 15mm/s
External Perimeters: 15mm/s
Top solid infill: 20mm/s

Extrusion multiplier: 0.95

Temperatur
Extruder: first layer 200 other layers 195
Bed: first layer 50 other layers 50

Retraction:
Length: 2mm

all other settings untouched

in 2 days I'll get few RJ4JP 01-08 IGUS bushings, will see if anything changes.
I don't hing this is just FW.

Re: poor print quality

After one night with calibration process, I just made a whistle (version from SD card)

But I dont know how to get rid of these lines? I want this result (pic from internet):

P.S.
Here is my test of first layer printing. Whats the best, what do u think? I pickup 750-800.

Here's hoping that it is something FW or stepper motor related because otherwise having to print at 15mms for outer perimeters just to eliminate the ringing is really a step backwards. I'd expect quality issues at full speed 100mms+ but if the MK2 can print at 35mms and not show any issues so should the MK3.

Re: poor print quality

here resoult with RJ4JP 01-08 IGUS bushings, same settings as in my lat post, External Perimeters: 15mm/s.
I can see a bit of improvement, but 15mm/s External Perimeters if you print large objects is a no-go.

One the one pic you can see inside Perimeters at 60mm/s with severe vertical lines.
Printed in normal mode (not stealth, will get to it in 1h)

in conclusion, IGUS bushings won't help much, this is not hardware problem (well, just a bit) but mostly FW/Trinamics

Re: poor print quality

here we go again.

now printed in stealth mode and 50mm/s external perimeter (bevor 15mm/s and normal mode, previous pics)

Now I can see "ringing" (or vertical lines) on Y and X

Re: poor print quality

Welp, completed my setup for getting the spool off the printer and I can confirm it made zero difference. Tonight I decided to tough it and print something with 15mm/s external perimeters since that's all I can get acceptable quality with, except I changed my filament from opaque to a transparent blue. With transparent filament it doesn't matter that the external perimeter is decent, the horrible inside perimeters show through and it looks just as nasty.

Starting to feel ripped off, it should have never shipped with this problem. It may get by on PLA's matte finish, but this is complete garbage on PETG. 🙁

Anyone want to add your ringing/banding reports to this Github issue, maybe get it a bit more visibility? https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/428
