PolyMaker PA6 carbon fiber excess extrusion issue

Hi All!

Looking for some insight into some defects I am getting printing some Polymaker PA-6 Carbon fibre.

The main issue is these little stringy bits coming of layer change points/extrusion stop-start points.

But the overall quality of small details is not the best.

Printing inside a lack table enclosure and pre-heating the nozzle and encloser prior to printing, along with drying filament in an ESUN lite dry box on setting 3 (55deg) for several hours before printing.

Settings are:

Layer height: tried both 0.2mm and 0.25mm

Extruder: 280

Bed: 50

Density: 1.17g/cm3

Speed: between 30mm/s and 60mm/s

Using Polymaker print profile from their website for the PA-6 CF

Extrusion multiplier set to 0.8 as this has been giving me the best dimension accuracy.

Thanks!

What nozzle are you using?

I would dry it before putting it in the dry box.  The dry box will not dry the filament in "several hours" and it is better at keeping things dry than drying them out.

You're right. I own also that Esun drier and it isn't a very good option for drying PA filament. 55C is too low and, in top of that, the real temperature inside the drier is always lower than the display setting.

@Seb, you'd need a food dehydrator or a powerful dedicated filament drier. I wonder also if an extrusion multiplier as low as 0.8  hasn't something to do with your issues. Speeds up to 60mm/s seem a bit high for PA. Do you get  good interlayer adhesion?, Is it warping under control ?

I've no experience with this filament, having tried only plain PA without carbon fiber, so take my opinions wih a grain of salt.

The nozzle is a 0.4mm hardened nozzle-X

I think your right the esun box is just good for 'maintaining' the filament while printing. Not for actually drying it out.  Was printing some CoPa nylon that was in there for 12hrs and still heard popping due to moisture.

Thanks for the reply.

I will have a play around with different extrusion multiplier as well. the 0.8 was set when printing a calibration cube of 20x20mm.

Also getting pretty poor layer adhesion, warping is under control. Printing inside an enclosure and I will preheat the inside beforehand.

The inside temperature is usually around 35degrees.

Going to get a proper dehydrator and try some more tests.

I will post any improvements and settings for reference.
