PETG Printing problems
Hey you guys! I just got some of Prusament's Prusa Orange PETG to use to print an enclosure for my prusa i3 Mk3s.
For some reason I can not get my files to print! I have tried almost everything under the sun to try and get my prints to work ( I say almost because I can't think of anything else to do but there may be something I'm missing).
The way my prints have been turning out can be seen in the pictures below.
This is everything I've tried:
- I re-calibrated the first layer to be a bit higher than what I use for PLA
- I did multiple cold pulls with PLA and Nylon to get any residue out of the nozzle
- I took appart the nozzle to make sure there wasn't a leak in the heat break (when I did this there actually was a leak and I replaced the heat break and cleared the gunk out but that didn't fix anything)
- I replaced the nozzle
- I reduced the overall speed of the print head (the speed was about 200 mm/s for a few settings, when I changed this it helped my printer get past the first few layers but then it still failed as the pictures show)
- increased the retraction distance to 1.8 mm
- Put foam at the top of the extruder head to remove dust from filament
- Turned the print cooling fan completely off
I'm at my wit's end! I don't know how on earth to get this stuff to work! Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
RE: PETG Printing problems
What do you have to do, to make it work afterwards?
Does your filament have a larger diameter blob on the end, inside the extruder?

RE: PETG Printing problems
Are you referring to something like this? This is when I unloaded the filament. Sorry for the bad quality
RE: PETG Printing problems
yes,
could you try the same model with reduced retraction, say 0.4mm?

RE: PETG Printing problems
I should have mentioned this in my list as well. Before I tried a retration length of 1.8mm I tried a retraction length of .5mm and it still failed. I'll try 0.4 though. Should I do it without the cooling fan?
RE: PETG Printing problems
I use cooling fan after layer 3 on PETG

RE: PETG Printing problems
Prusa petg setting for filament,(this is hotter)
Print setting: 0.2 quality, then your speed is slower,
Leave door of printer enclosure open.
Normally i use glue sick, but it did not work, cleaned the table , clean with alcohol(and dish soap), now it sticks, with nothing on the table.
This worked for me, same filament as yours.
I had not sticking on table and stringing, after temp higher it was oke.
RE: PETG Printing problems
The print on your image looks to me, quite OK. But a bigger picture might have shown the defects you are aiming for.
Can you describe a little better what you are not satisfied with. Is it a quality problem, or does your print crash?
When I print with PETG I use Prusa PET with default settings. I just change the infill to Gyroid.

RE: PETG Printing problems
The print certainly is high quality. The only problem is that it isn't finished. The layer you see in the picture is the layer at which the printer stopped extruding. The printer continues along it's printing route without putting any addition layers. This is honestly what has been so frustrating. The print seem just fine until it decides to not put down any more layers.
RE: PETG Printing problems
So I printed the part again with your recommended settings and it made it farther than it ever has on the print! However, it still failed ☹ . I think that's mostly my fault though, I notice that the hotend was actually leaking towards the moments when it stopped extruding. I think your settings might have worked had the leaking not happened. I have had problems with leaking before and thought I addressed them by tightening the nozzle and heat break at operating temperature. Turns out I didn't actually fix the problem after all. I'm getting a new heat block and heat break since the ones I have now seem to be pretty gummed up on the threads. Hopefully one I install those it should work fine.
RE: PETG Printing problems
Thanks for the advice! I'll try those settings once I get my parts. I haven't had any issues at all with bed adhesion though, the powder coated sheet I have seems to work pretty well!
RE: PETG Printing problems
The common heat break jam is typically with PLA - but a stub at the end of filament unloaded after a jam is a common theme. Especially if the stub measures 2.2 mm diameter. A new Prusa heat break will exhibit the same ... only a stock E3D-V6 heat break will resolve this specific issue.
RE: PETG Printing problems
If the extrusion ceases at the same level each time, it can also be an electrical defect.
A damaged cable may cease to function as it bends at this height.
I myself have experienced this, but then it was the thermistor that stopped working.

I actually got a new heat break as well! Printing now hopefully everything works🤞
