Newbie having issues printing with Raptor PLA

Hello,

I am a total newbie to 3d printing. I just assembled my mk3 kit about week ago and spent most of the weekend printing the models included on the card using the prusa silver pla. Everything seems to be working well and it has been a lot of fun.

I am having difficulties printing with Raptor PLA that I purchased from MakerGeeks. I have tried printing with the nozzle temp at 245c and the bed temp at 60c as specified on the label and it extrudes a little in the first line it prints at the front of the bed, but when it starts printing the part, little to no material goes on the bed. I have searched around and read that a bed temp of 50c and nozzle at 233c worked for someone else, but it behaves the same when I try to print. I was ambitious and bought what i thought was really good pla from makergeeks, but I am not having much luck yet. I have 6 rolls of this raptor pla in different colors that I hope to use.

Can anyone send me settings that work on their mk3 for raptor pla reliably? I am struggling a bit with the steps to take when starting a new roll of filament that is not one that exists as a slic3r preset. Should I just buy some plain old PLA to start with? I'm just hoping to print in a filament that is not prusa silver. I have been looking at youtube videos for a good printing setting primer but have not had much luck Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Christopher

Re: Newbie having issues printing with Raptor PLA

I print quite a bit with Raptor and use a variation of Prusa PLA on Slic3r. The only real difference is that I print at 330C and 50C.

I assume you mean 230 not 330?

Re: Newbie having issues printing with Raptor PLA

I managed to successfully print a temp tower and found 230 degrees seems to be the best temperature that was on the print.

I am struggling a bit as the filament didn't seem to want to stick to the bed well, but after a little while it seems to stick and print ok.

However I tried printing the bearing print that comes on the card (re-sliced with different temp settings) and it prints for a while and then seems to stop coming out and i end up with the printer thinking its printing without any material coming out and the nozzle still moving well above the last layer. It prints about half the height of the print when the filament stops. Any ideas what that means? I tried this twice and got similar results,

I do get clicking sometimes from the extruder (not constantly) and it seems that the filament has been stuck once or twice. (I raised the temp to 255 and unloaded the filament successfully. After reloading the filament prints again, but the same gcode seems to fail twice in the same place. Not sure what that means as it was the 3d model from prusa with the modified PLA setting but extruder temp 230 and bed temp 60.

Sorry for all the questions, Thanks for your responses.

Re: Newbie having issues printing with Raptor PLA

I went through the same story with MKG Raptor PLA.
-> 235C works best, correct.
-> Make sure the extruder gear has perfect pressure on the filament. This filament is harder to push through the nozzle. Using 0.6 nozzle might also benefit
-> With many retractions, I'm getting a heat creep sometimes. Deactivating retraction might help

After I used one Raptor PLA spool, I never bought a second one. Got never reliable prints with it.

Thanks. How do I make sure the extruder gear has perfect pressure?

My procedure is as following:
1. Load filament
2. Unload filament
3. Check the filament in the area where marks are visible from the gear
3.a If It's squished -> loosen the bolts (less pressure). Proceed to number 1 for verification
3.b If it's barely visible -> tighten the bolts (more pressure). Proceed to step 1 for verification
3.c You hit step 3a but now the filament is still perfectly round without any deformation. Time to print again!

Perfect pressure is applied, if the marks are perfectly visible but the filament is not squished yet. (Hit step 3c)

Re: Newbie having issues printing with Raptor PLA

I was have a very similar issue using Raptor PLA on my mk3. It would just stop extruding, I would start hearing clicking and the printer would think everything was fine. From everything I could tell this was heat creep as the filament end was swollen when I pulled out. The first layer was printing at 235, then all the next layers 230.

So far it looks like I have been able to resolve it by turning of retraction. Not ideal because I will probably get stringing. Hopefully it can be fined tuned with some retraction, just not as much as the default settings.

I know it’s an old thread, but hopefully this helps others.
