need some ABS printing suggestions

Hi there, ... I probably should have bought ASA instead of ABS. Once in a while I need to replace the fan shroud. To make it heat resistant I ordered prusa ABS. Very thin lines do not stick to the heat bed. To overcome I use 1-3 rafts layers. But the printer does not fill up probably .. how to solve the issue?

Thanks a lot

Stefan

all parameters are standard. The filament diameter is measured 1,75mm - perfect, the flow is M221 S95 - like always.

@blatti

Two things are important:
- Clean the printing bed with a grease-dissolving detergent and sponge, rinse well with warm water and wipe dry with a lint-free towel. Afterwards, do not touch the printing plate with bare fingers.
- First Layer T-Adjust is essential. Here is a good description: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/life-adjust-z-my-way/

Also check right temperatures and use a brim.

If anything, I've found that ABS sticks too well to the smooth sheet.  If it does not stick on a truly clean sheet, I would suspect that the Z calibration may be off.

A few hints I would offer for successful and consistent ABS prints.

1. Use an enclosure or the draft shield option.  Draft shield is available in both PS and Cura.  This will give you a 'mini enclosure' around your print.

2. Use a release agent.  I've lately been using the Layerneer Bed Weld.  It coats much thinner than the glue stick.  This is particularly important with prints having a large footprint.

3. Preheat the machine to ABS temperature before launching the print and let it stabilize for maybe 10-15 minutes or so.  This lets the bed, sheet, etc. become dimensionally stable at the higher temperature.

4. Let the print cool down to almost room temperature before removing it from the sheet.

Maybe the new PC Blend filament from Prusa is better for fan shroud as it resists higher temperatures.

I got a roll some weeks ago and it seems as easy as ABS to print.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

I would agree that PC Blend not difficult at all to print with.  I used it to print my replacement fan shroud a few months ago.  In fact, that was my excuse to try it.  Before I got the enclosure, I used the draft shield with the PC Blend, as I did with most ABS prints.

I was a bit leery of how firmly it was reported to stick to the plate, so at first I used a liberal amount of the glue stick.  For my last PC Blend print I tried the Layerneer and found that it releases quite well.

@jsw
Not familiar with Layerneer, is it like glue stick and where is it sold?

@blatti
If you have access to a SL1 or other resin printer it is a good solution to print it in resin. Resin is chemical hardened and will resist high temperatures without melting.
My MK3S fan shrouds is printed in resin and they work very well (my adjusted model here).

One of the others here turned me on to this stuff a while back.  You can get it on Amazon.

It's much thinner than glue stick, goes on as a liquid.  It was originally intended for glass plates, but it works very well on PEI as well.

I've found that it works very well as a release agent for ABS and PETg in lieu of glue stick.  I've found that it's also very good as an adhesion booster for PLA, mainly when I have a piece with small support footings.  When I have a large flat piece (PLA) I'll often use a dab of it where the corners and/or edges will be to prevent curl-up and warping.

well done - it worked out perfect - I just need to do the resign test - thanks to the community - the world is getting smaller in such a positive way. And it is nice to recognize that the makers or 3d printer user - use their brain .... in such crazy C-times. Take care and thanks for the help
