Issues with Sakata and Devil Design filaments are clogging the extruder

Hi,

I have issues with printing with these two filaments, after 5 minutes of good printing, the extruder does not output any filament. If I unload the filament and  reload it back is happening the same. I used Prusa, Fillamentum and a noname filament without problems.

I used Prusa and Cura slicers (which are using different temperatures for generic PLA) and it is happening the same.

A dig on the net showed that the clogging issue is caused by a specific of the Prusa heat break design in order to accommodate the MMU system. The solution presented is to replace the heatbreak on the extruder but I am not very happy with this approach as it implies changes on the printer hardware. Is there any other solution for solving this without modifying the hardware?

I am looking forward for your feedback.

Best regards,

Daniel

RE: Issues with Sakata and Devil Design filaments are clogging the extruder

I just tried printing with Devil Design PLA filament for the first time on the standard Colorfabb PHA settings. went well for the first 6 layers but ultimately started clogging, which seems the same behaviour you describe. I have not installed my MMU2 yet so this cannot be the issue.

To me (just judging from experience) it seems the temperature (210°C-215°C is a bit too high for this filament. Will do some test and get back to you.

Hi,

Just for reference I have received from Devil Design the following answer:

Hello Daniel,

thanks for Your message.

The problem is too low printing temperature, please try 230-235.

I tried this and finally went much better, no more cloggings. The same with Sakata, they answered me something similar so I increased temperature. In the end Devil Design was working better then Sakata. Finished both reels and changed to Colorfabb Economy PLA which is going better but is stringing.

As a note I have the normal MK3S without MMU.

Hope this helps 🙂

@daniel-mihailescu

Awesome!

This saves me some testing;)

And also I was wrong in stating the temperature was too high, it should have been even higher.

Thank you for your reaction!

Hi Daniel,

I can't believe that I saw this. I have been having issues with the Sakata as well. I talked to my supplier and they said 220-225 as a temp. Bah....didn't work. Went back to cheap filament and even my Palette is having no issues.

So, in the end did you try any other settings for the Sakata like speeds, retractions etc?

Hi

I managed to retrieve the response from Sakata

Steven Bishop Floyd
dan13lm hi. Prusa mk3 has problems with many filaments and as I learned from various forums is due to a bad engineering of the hotend that doesn’t cool in a uniform way. The solution is to raise temperature 15 more degrees so 220-225 . People is waiting for a solution from prusa and e3d. And try to lower retractions . By the way remember that 850 is not a normal Pla ... has better heat resistance but needs more temperature to melt

If someone wants to see the original response from Sakata please go to

However after changing the temperature Devil Design worked better than Sakata.

So, I ran a test yesterday and set my nozzle to 230C. Still clogged. I have noticed that it is always the black filament. I'm going to remove the black from the equation and see if any of the other colors will finish.

Hi,

I do not know if you already did that but before trying with higher temperature I took out the filament and also took out cleaned the nozzle. I went up to 235 for first layer and 225 the rest for Sakata. I do not think that color has an influence but I tested one single color, black.  However, I would not buy another spool of this brand.

RE: Issues with Sakata and Devil Design filaments are clogging the extruder

Hi

I found a solution to this little issue. It is not entirely the Sakata filament. I struggled for a while then bought a $8 heat break that replaces the stock one. This heat break has no step on the inside diameter where the one supplied with the Prusa i3 MK3 has a step.

It was a $8 part and 30 minutes to change the heat break to be able to successfully use this filament. I've printed for the last 15-20 hours without a stutter or any intervention at all. I thought I was going to have to find the temp sweet spot so I started with the generic profile supplied with Prusa Slicer (205C hotend and 60C bed) and it runs smooth.

So far, I'm happy with this filament now that I know what the fix is.

Hi Jody,

I am glad you solved the issue and shared this with us. However this require hardware modification which I do not want as I am considering the MMU and I understood that this change in the heatbreak was done in order to accommodate the MMU.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

If you are looking at the MMU then I agree, changing the heat break is not the solution for you. For any others that struggle printing any 850D PLA, this may be worth looking into.

Hey Daniel

I have  exaclty  the same issue  and i only can print Prusa  and Esun filaments.  it  is  fustrating  becuase the printer is totally new  and  i have  another still in the package.

Hi

I have used the reccommended temperature and I was able to print the filaments in subject. I also used Colorfabb and some local filament which was working well. Then i changed the heatbreak with the original E3D and I did not had issues anymore.
