Issue when using a raft

When I print using a raft, the first layer of the object (not the layer on the bed) is terrible. See the photo below. The rest of the print is great. Any idea whats up? I am using Slic3r PE v1.39.2 with almost stock Prusa PLA settings (temps and starting gcode changed).

Proud owner of a Mk3 that is producing very nice prints. There is room for improvement as I learn more about it, but so far I am very happy.

Re: Issue when using a raft

I presume that you are using Slic3r. In support material you can specify Contact Z distance. Use 0.2 (detachable). Even with this value, the surface will not be perfect. Less you use, the surface will be more rough. Next issue, if your Z distance is too low, the first couple of layers will be "compressed". So if we presume that is your case and that you use 2 layers raft we get your result.

The question here is why to use raft ? Raft is perfect for uneven beds and/or bad adhesion. With Prusa you have automatic bed leveling and excellent adhesion (sometimes too good 😉 )

Yes I am using Slic3r. My live Z is really good for all my other prints. I normally would not have used a raft, but the instructions said that it was advisable to, so I did. Next time I will try it without.

I was just wondering why the first layer after the raft was so bad when the rest of my prints are good. Thanks for your ideas. I will check them out.
