How to print this phone holder?

Hi Prusers!

It is a part of the garden tractor mower, so it needs to be robust, moist and even temperature resistant.

I created the model myself, waiting for the printer to come. AL-KO Comfort Garden Tractor Phone Holder - Cover replacement

Would the ASA be good for it?

what should be the wall thickness/number of perimeters?

should i rather split it to two parts?

infill? skirt/brim?

thanks,

looking forwar for my printer to come!

Michal, SVK

What is your experience with printing? You are still waiting for printer, but already talking about perimeters, infill, skirt, brim. So it will not be your first print?

Because first make some test prints, which comes with printers. Learn by it. Loosing a day-print can be frustrating and even sometimes harmfull for the printer, if you leave it unattended.

This model looks fine, but it is very big, the whole print bed diagonally. I am afraid that with ASA it may warp. For sure without enclosure. I think that if you have a well calibrated first layer, the print should hold without brim or skirt. For sure you will need supports. Those will make it a bit ugly from inside (does not matter) and the edges (should be easy to sand it). Perimeters and infill are not so relevant for such a huge print. Yes, maybe I would use more perimeters to reduce the crazy tiny infill in the main body. You can use variable layer height to start the print with 0.2mm layer height and on the top reduce it to make it nicer, but will print longer.

Maybe I would first recommend to make it from PETG or PLA. You will have a chance to test it. If the print will not go well, you will not loose so much, you will not have to breath the chemicals from ASA. Yes, it will not survive in the outer environment for years, but you can reprint anytime again. If you have more experience even from ASA and smooth it with aceton vapours.

Making big targets on the first prints can easilly end up with the word you addressed us by in the beginning.

Hello,

thanks for short introduction. This looks like it is much more complicated that I have expected. I have asked friend to print it for me, looks like I would need to do some modifications 🙂

Thanks!

Whatever it would be a bugger to print. If the edge that runs along the mudguard is straight I'd definitely cut the pocket at that height and print the rest of the pocket separately, then join the two together. I know it seems like "cheating" to break a design into parts but it really isn't.
