Help! Jam(?) after filment-out & reload new spool

I've had my MK3 for several years, but have never used the filament out sensor.  I just exercised it for the first time, but I'm now stuck at reloading filament, and it appears jammed.  I'm one spool deep in a ~1.5kg job (PETG) that I would REALLY like to avoid throwing away - pleas help!

Here's what steps occurred:

  • printer started beeping at filament out
  • It's prompting me to remove filament, but looking down the ptfe tube, i don't see any.  It's the only menu option, so I press it.  I don't see anything
    • in hindsight, I should have stopped here I supppose 🙁
  • next screen says to load new filament.  I snip a point on a new roll, insert, and press go.  It feeds a bit then starts skipping.
    • Note I used a different color for the reload (this is a large part, but will be painted)
  • I continue to say "color not correct", giving the new filament some additional steady downward pressure with my hand.  The old color 'weeps' a bit out of the nozzle, but isn't extruding.
  • after a few more tries of "color not correct", whatever was blocking melts and the (old) color starts extruding.  It moves perhaps up to 1cm of filament.  But then i stops.  The new color did *not* show at all.

Now after trying "color not correct" again over several minutes, there is no more feeding, and also zero filament "weeping".  The only menu choices are "yes" (aka filament loaded successfully, continue print), "filament not loaded" (fast feed, then slow), and "color not correct" (slow feed)

Can I recover the job?  I've never had to clear a jam (Thank you Prusa!!!) so looking that up now.  Thank you!!

Ok, appears that was easy - after opening the side door, disengaging the gears, I pulled the new filament, cut a clean end, and was able to just push it through like peanut butter

So the new filament hung up somewhere in the hot end - does anyone see an obvious reason why?  I didn't realize there was any mechanical obstructions in there (besides frozen filment in the heatsink region - which my fix above would have definitely not addressed)
