Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I'm trying to print this Ghost: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1101793
The problem is that after a few layers it eventually comes unstuck from the bed. I'm using the powder coated sheet and tried with and without glue stick. Cleaned with alcohol, tried acetone, but nothing works. I added a brim, but it only prints on the outside.
The attachment photo shows where the printing has problems, and it looks like some material is curved up a bit on the tips where they look like half moons. I'm guessing that it leaves a bit of raised material on the ends where the extruder jumps to the next shape. Eventually the extruder bumps into those raised spots and it comes unstuck from the sheet.
I'm using the Prusa PLA in white and glow in the dark with the Prusa PLA setting (not Prusament).
Do I need to add a raft? If so, how do you do that? Any other suggestions on how to get this to print?
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
Stay with the brim but wash the plate both sides with dish detergent like Dawn or Fairy Liquid . I use about a half oz to the washing liquid to about a cup of water and scrub with a wad of kitchen towel in both X and Y directions on the plate until it is well covered in suds and then I rinse dry holding it just by the label area at the front I either air dry by waving it about or pat dry with a lint free cloth. don't touch the print area. preheat the bed for a few min before you start the print.
if none of this helps try support structure
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
A dirty base is not the issue, and I have cleaned it so many times. I put a failed print under the microscope, and you can see the issue under magnification. The printer adds these blobs to either side of the feature as it jumps from one place to the other. I think the solution will be in modifying extruder settings, but I'm not sure what I need. Take a look at the pictures below, and compare them to the slicer screen shot I put in my post.
I'm pretty sure the solution is to prevent the blobs from being printed, since the extruder crashes into them which pops the model off the base.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
you mentioned cleaning with iso and acetone but not the critical dawn scrub so I mentioned it Have you tried the Pretty PLA config for the Slic3r pr? it fixed the blob problems for me

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I think a lot of what your doing is a good step in the right direction this print itself does not look like it offers much for surface contact. I would keep the brim and not bother with a raft as I don't think that will help any for the issue you are having. I would maybe try lowering the temp of the pla a little and see if that helps with the excess oozing or try and increase the retraction a little.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I tried the new INI settings, but that did not really help. The printer did a weird thing where the extruder went to the middle of the build plate for 5 minutes targeting a temperature of 140. I thought it crashed, but then it moved to do the wipe, and waited there for it to heat back up to 195. That caused a filament jam. Tried that 3 times, then made sure the bondtech gears were clear and moved back to my original settings.
The acetone worked better than Dawn for cleaning, and the raft was much worse.
I'll try the Prusa PLA settings from the new INI, it looks like the temp is about 10 degrees lower. I think the key will be with getting the right temperature, and retract settings right. I have only had the printer a week, so I'm still learning all of the settings. Two nights of messing with this trying to print a ghost for my kids to take to their teacher. At least I'm learning something. Those PLA boogers are just in the way, and the extruder is always going to knock it off the base once it hits them.
The silver Prusa PLA prints much better than the white and glow in the dark, maybe that is because the silver has the +/- 0.03 tolerance compared to 0.05. The silver did not print either. I'm trying supports after the temperature, but there is not a lot of material there to hold it down once the extruder hits it.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
retraction settings?
im printing it now at 135 mm/s ill see how far it goes "for science"
retraction at .8
I have a Prusa,therefore I research.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I tried:
Retraction Length - 0.9, 1.2, 1.4
Retraction Speed - 70 mm/s
With and without wipe while retracting
0.15 layer height, 20% fill density with a brim on default settings. I updated Slic3r to 1.41.1 this morning
Failed in all cases, and adding supports was worse.
I'm using the Prusa White PLA, and tried the glow in the dark as well

I have the E3D V6 hardened steel nozzle 0.4 (wanted to go glow in the dark), and I recalibrated

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
my first one failed last night. I added a 5 layer brim and now its printing a 3rd.
.2 layer if it helps. but using cheap inland glow in the dark. so it works at least even at fast speeds. I really should have turned the speed down before adding brims, but it was late 😀

Wonder what I am going to get home to!
left it printing when I came out this morning...

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
hopefully the ghost doesn't scare you 😀 100% possible mine failed last night because someone has his speed turned up 😀

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I should shoot for next Halloween rather than this one. It will probably take me that long to figure out how to print this thing. I'll try the speed though. It will be interesting to see if anyone is able to print it.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
Look what I came home to!
Cheap white PLA
Slic3r pe generic PLA 0.2mm layer height, 10mm brim.
set to 42% feed rate, on the LCD Screen

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
i have 3 complete just with the added brim of 5. might not have needed to be 5 but that's my default 😀
only took 2 hours, you still have time.

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
So it is possible to print 🙂
How did you get the brim to go under the print? I could only get the brim to go on the outside, so it is only supporting the part on one side instead of both.
I'm also using the hardened steel extruder, and I read somewhere that you need to increase the temp by 10 degrees. I've been decreasing the temp.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
Hi Breazile,
Brims only go outside the shape :'(
instead of a brim, try a raft, in the support menu, that will cover the whole of the model area and spill outside too...
might be best to do a couple of layers!

Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I hear hardened steel. needs the extra temp because it doesn't conduct the heat as good.
I just use brass, let the filament eat them. ive had mine for like 3 months and ive printed 2 rolls of iron 1 roll of stainless steel and about 1/2 a roll of glow in the dark. and ive only changed my nozzle once.
I have a Prusa,therefore I research.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
@Joan, thanks for the tips, I made it further than I have before, but it still failed. One question, what setting is feed? I see speed and flow, so I set speed to 42%. I also bumped the temperature up.
I think I'll probably switch nozzle back to the brass one if flow does not work.
Re: Ghost comes unstuck from the bed during printing
I finally was able to print it. I switched back to the brass nozzle, and set the print speed to 70. Once it bridged all of the pieces together then I changed the speed to 100. Looks like the hardened steel nozzles are more bother than worth, I'll just get more brass ones and replace them more often when I have abrasive filament.
