generate supports only where absolutely needed?

I have a model I want to print that needs supports for parts of the model that can't be bridged; those areas are more than just bridging, they are parts that are not connected to the model until several layers up. Here's the thingiverse link: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2482299 Specifially, the spiral cutout and the cat mouth shape cutout.

I'm not worried about supports for the other cutouts, because I have acceptable quality with just printing the overhangs in models like this. Is there a way to have the slicer only generate supports for those bits? Setting the overhang threshold to 1 degree generates fewer branches in the supports, but still generates them for everything that requires bridging.

Should I just give in and design my own supports?

Did you try the paint on support tool in Prusaslicer?

I have to admit I didn't know about that tool. That looks like it's exactly what I needed! Thank you for answering the complete noob question 🙂
