First layer problem with Wood PLA

Hello all!

I am running into a problem when printing with wood pla (FormFutura Easywood), my first layer looks terrible..I am having bad adhesion. It was somehow manageable so far, but since I finished my spool and put a new one in, it just got worse compared to before, and I am printing the same piece. It's like the filament is curling up and sticking to the nozzle. Any tips on how to improve my print? tia!

Here's some pictures:

here a comparison between the printed piece and the contour of the first layer, you can see the bad adhesion and missing filament..

I am printing with the following settings:

0.6 nozzle

fan speed: 0% first layer, 100% after

nozzle temp: 215°c first layer, 200°c after

print speed: 12 mm/s first layer, 184 mm/s after (infill)

RE: First layer problem with Wood PLA

First of all heat up your nozzle and clean it with a brass brush, not sure if it got so dirty during the last print or if it was before it, it can easily break your prints.

Second important thing to check is if your bed is clean, I always swipe it with 99% IPA before every print.

Third common issue that could happen especially if that's a new spool is filament moisture, I had few cases where fresh filament out of the bag needed drying, at least first few layers on the spool, actually I had this issue with wood filament too recently.

If all of the above are done and you still get the same issue let us know and we can dig deeper.

RE: First layer problem with Wood PLA

I've printed a fair bit with wood (although not that particular brand) and I found that a) it's more sensitive than regular PLA to the correct live z setting, and b) I get better results using Layerneer or Magigoo to improve adhesion (even though my sheets are regularly cleaned with soap and wiped with PLA between prints).

Thank you both for your insight, I tried again and drying the filament and adjusting the live Z improved the result. Being fairly new to all this, I thought new filament was dry, that's good to know it's not always the case! There is still room for improvement for the first layer, probably some glue like Fuchsr recommended might help!

Thanks!
