First layer lifting

Hello everybody,

What is going on with my first layer?  Please see photo.  Overall adhesion seems good but some passes on layer 1 seem to absolutely want to jump up.  Printing the next layer sometimes smooths it over and the print works well except for cavities underneath.  But sometimes these things cause a crash at the second layer.

I'm replying here to my own post.  I just discovered that the location of the lifting is non-random; it repeats with subsequent attempts.  So I suspect I should clean my metal plate....

I clean my build plate with Hot Water and a little dish soap, then rinse with hot water and dry with plain paper towel.

After cleaning, keep your fingers off the build plate surface...

with textured build plates, I sometimes need to use scotchbright to really clean the surface

If the 1st layer is building up something looking like "waves", it can also be that your z-offset is too low. I am not sure if that is what is at play here.

I would most definitely check the Z calibration, first with the 'zig zag and flag' internal method, and then with one of those 3x3 single-layer calibration prints.

Those 3x3 calibration prints will show up any left/right and front/rear irregularities and allow correction of them.

RE: First layer lifting

This happens to me as well, so I print the first layer at 10 % speed and when the first layer is done i gradually increase the print speed to 100 %. (I know 10% is annoyingly slow, but I could not find another solution) This problem only shows up when I use prusaslicer and I am sure it does not have anything to do with a cleaning the build plate.
