First layer fails

Hey everyone,

I have been having repeated failures with the first layer on my MK3S+. The printer has no issue with unloading/reloading and the filament extrudes perfectly well from the nozzle. However, when it attempts to print a model it almost immediately fails. Usually the skirt print fines, but then the filament stops adhering to the build plate well (instead sticking to the nozzle) and then fails. Printing support is especially difficult.

So far I have tried:

  • recalibrating the first layer calibration (i think the z-axis position is correct although it is harder to tell because of this adhesion issue)
  • tested the k factor calibration (standard seems the best)
  • tried different filament (and dried out the filament I was using)
  • tried a different build plate
  • cleaned the build plate with IPA
  • cleaned the nozzle (helped slightly)
  • heated the nozzle up to 260 to melt out any possible clogs
  • tightened the drive gear (helped slightly)
  • slowed down the printing speed for the first layer

Nothing has completely solved the issue and I am out of ideas. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks, Odette

RE: First layer fails

My money is on incorrect first layer calibration. Print a calibration strip such as https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/105404 or just a 20x20 square (anything bigger than the built-in tiny rectangle) and use that to optimize live Z. If you still have an issue, post a picture of the first layer.
