First Layer difficulties with PETG + TEFLON plate

I can consistently print across the bed when I print with PLA + SMOOTH plate.

I change the plate to TEFLON and filament to PETG.  I adjust the Z-axis to the nozzle distance.  HOWEVER, the distance from the plate to the nozzle seems to very +/- .2 mm.  I have a Super PINDA so I thought the bed leveling software would correct?

Thank you.

RE: First Layer difficulties with PETG + TEFLON plate

Can you clarify what you mean by 'TEFLON' sheet? Is this a Prusa print sheet (SATIN or TEXTURED) or a third party product?

Have you done a first layer calibration for the 'TEFLON' sheet to determine the optimum Z-offset?

You definitely need to do that because the coating on each sheet type is a different thickness. There is quite a big difference in thickness between the Smooth PEI sheet and the others, but less difference between the Textured and Satin sheets. You may also find that you need a different Z-offset for each side of the sheet (especially the smooth PEI). You can use the functionality in the printer software to store the Z-offset values for 8 sheets (or sheet sides). Just remember to select the right sheet in the printer settings when you physically swap the sheet.

The Satin sheet is my 'go-to' choice for just about everything I print. With that I find that PETG requires a little less squish than PLA, so I raise the Z-offset by 0.02 when I print PETG.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Tim

Thank you Tim.  I apologize.  It is the TEXTURED plate I am having challenges with.  I do 1st level calibration whenever changing sheets.  But it seems this sheet is not good at getting a good layer across the plate.

What I don't understand is why the super PINDA doesn't compensate.

I am grateful for your answer. Thank you.

PINDA cannot compensate. PINDA is triggered by the metal sheet not the coating. You need a sheet specific first layer calibration due to the fact that the coatings have different thickness and you need the distance between the nozzle and the coating to be correct, but PINDA makes the extruder stop at a certain distance between PINDA and the metal. That's the reason you can save different fist layer calibrations for different sheets in the LCD menu.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
