designing from a photo

we have ran out of frames for our eye protection at work.  we have plenty of the plastic shield that attaches to it but out of frames.  so i thought this will the best time for me to learn on how to design/create my first 3d model.

i will be using Shapr3d on my ipad.

i have figured out the part that i can take a picture and then trace over it but what im not sure about is the scaling.

how do i make sure the photo is the actual,life size scale im thinking if the photo is taken too close or to far i might be tracing something thats too small or too big.

really appreciate if i can get help. it'll go towards a good cause in proving PPE.

p.s. or if someone can help me create one or maybe there is something already existent point me to a link would again be appreciated.

thanks and stay safe.

Two things spring to mind here;

  • If you're using an iPad Pro then you can use the 'measure' feature to find the length, or
  • otherwise be old-fashioned and measure the object by hand.

Then just scale the photo accordingly. Measure a few pertinent lengths to make sure.

I was thinking more of 'simple' - measure the physical object and then just make sure that the CAD representation had the same properties. But, yeh - scaling the photo with the ruler in, if your CAD system lets you trace like that, would be a bit easier. You could even photograph the object on graph paper. I suppose it depends on the geometry of the object.

I use FreeCAD for things like this, which lets you create a 2-D drawing and extrude that into 3-D. Then add or subtract other similarly created 3-D objects. But you'd need a full computer for that one. (And a bit of a learning-curve.)

Thanks all for the suggestions. I tried just tracing the photo but i did not come out right, scale wise.
