Davinci Kite from Thingiverse

Hello,

i am trying to print the "Davinci Kite" from Thingiverse ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:930236 )for my daughter but i cant get the prusa slicer to slice it correctly. I always get the error "Empty layers detected, the output would not be printable" and the sliced result is not complete, there are parts missing. If i lay the model onto the plate and slice it horizontally i dont get the error (?) but there are still parts of the model missing. Any ideas?

The part, or one of them, i cant print is https://cdn.thingiverse.com/assets/74/ca/4b/d6/07/Left_rib_1.stl

I am trying to print it with a 0.6 Nozzle in 0.2 and 0.15 layer height btw. Here are the images of the model in prusa slicer

Good old thingiverse

There are a lot of what I call student models on thingiverse - models that have never been successfully printed.  In your slicer, check the integrity of the model - is there a little triangle symbol next to the part in the parts list?  If so, there may be errors in the model that you downloaded that need to be corrected.

If you can get it to slice by re-orienting it, that is good.  Many models you find will not print correctly without some experimentation such as re-orienting to make it have a bed contact point and to control how supports will need or not be needed.

model maybe broken

Thanks for the reply. There are 11 successfull prints (makes) referenced on the model page. So it somehow must either be printable or printable models had been replaced with broken ones.

I am well aware that some models "just dont work" and others do require tinkering. I did try to repair the stl file but it didnt work. Laying the "rib" onto the plate and using supports gets rid of the error message but the model is still not beeing sliced correctly. There are still missing parts.

Slices correctly when laid down

I did lay it down again and reduced the layer height to 0.15mm. Now it slices correctly.

Any idea what could prevent the slicer from slicing it correctly vertically?

That's a doozy for sure

I just downloaded and repaired that broken STL file - then look at it it's 27K mm high - definitely not going to fit on my prusa that's for sure.

Assuming your repair got it to a different scale than my 3dbuilder did, you may want to turn on "detect thin walls" and "add extra perimeters if needed" settings in the layers section of prusa slicer.  Often, rediculous thin parts that are thinner than a single wall will be zeroed out by the slicer if you don't turn on those settings.

RE: 18.6mm height

Its 18.6mm high. Probably a configuration missmatch between stl and your slicer defaults....

YMMV

It's definitely got errors in it.  Maybe the repair is what made my copy grow to be several meters tall.

Solution: add extra layers if needed ON, detect thin walls ON

Thank you! add extra layers if needed ON and detect thin walls ON it slices fine!!!!!!
