Change Filament Settings

So I'm pretty new to 3D printing, assembled my kit last weekend and printed some of the test objects from the included SD card. No problems there.

I'd like to use PETg which has other temperature requirements then PLA.
I thought this is simply changed by the preheat setting. Which it is not. Preheating brings the temps to where they should be (PET setting), starting a print resets it to PLA settings and cools down again.

The slicer software is completely alien to me and so far I'm pretty sure I just googled the wrong questions.

Where does it say which filament-settings are used? Is it something that gets compiled into the g-code? Is it a "hidden" setting (to me)?

(sorry if this is a frequently asked question but it seems to me that I'm either asking the wrong question or it is so obvious that no one has asked the question before)

RE: Change Filament Settings

Veloran,

No worries.  It's quite simple.  First, I am assuming that you are using the PRUSA SLICER.  You did not mention which slicer you are using.

You are correct that if you use the SAME GCODE and try to print with other filament types you will run into trouble.  Check out this screen shot and look for the Filament setting.  It's the Blue highlighted line to the right side of the slicer.  There are MANY settings depending on the filament you wish to use.  Happy Printing.

RE: Change Filament Settings

Thanks for the fast response robin,

So the filament settings are stored within the g-code file, good to know.

Yes, I use the Prusa Slicer (didn't know you can use others). I also just figured out that there is a simple/advanced/expert settings option (lower tiers hide functionality to make it less confusing, adding to my confusion).

Are there pre-configured profiles available? I'd guess at least for the Prusament- Filaments (which I use).

The default settings work fine for PLA I'd guess that there is not that much adjustment required? (like slight temperature differences due to manufacturing offsets etc.)

RE: Change Filament Settings

Veloran,

First off, I am just a user like you.  Second,  Settings in the slicer are kind of set up like this:

Use the 3 basic settings on the side until you get comfortable with your project, namely Print settings, Filaments, and printer.  The printer you shouldn't have to change.

Then the settings you have for simple, advanced, and expert are color coded guides for you to change other things.  You can set up your OWN pre-configured settings like the folks at Prusa did for things that they have on their download.  Things like the Ikea Lack table modification for the MMU2S that I am working on now.

They changed a few settings and saved their work as a PROJECT, (3MF file).  A project saves the configuration so that you can slice your STL (Stereo Lithography) artwork and have the printer commands and settings all right there.

It gets more complicated but that is the basics.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Glad to answer them.  Best to experiment and get some of the Prusa projects in 3MF to try out the settings.

BTW, you can save your settings for say a special PLA filament that has a working temp different by going into the filament settings menu at the top and changing one (or more), of the LOCKED items then saving the settings.  Your new option is added to the drop down when you save it with a name you provide.

I hope that helps,

Robin

I know you are a user, was just being polite 😛

Well thanks, somehow the way you'd operate with a CNC machine was stuck in my head. It was like a blob of colours, taking a step back and focus a little bit and realizing that you look at a picture that you simply didn't realize was there.

Sat down yesterday and tried it again. Made two prints (with my custom settings), one a little bit more complicated and they came out nice.
The mystery menu that I was looking for is actually there too. When pressing the menu button after starting a print there is an additional menu with "Tune" settings, allowing you to adjust basically all values you need.
