Can't get a clean Print

Hello,

I've been trying to print this part cleanly for a week in ABS with no luck.

Here are the parameters:

  • Solidworks STL Model
  • 3 parts on bed (tried printing lager housing part alone with same results)
  • Filament is Hatchbox ABS white
  • I'm printing in an enclosure holding temp at 88 F
  • I've tried different orientations and custom support. I tried both a single housing print (prefered) and a 2 part housing.
  • Using the Prusa slicer setting for ABS

The prints are plagued with blobs and rough finish in support areas. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm uncertain if it is the orientation that I'm trying to print or ABS print settings.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul

If your willing to zip up and post a .3mf project file I'll see if I can help.

@swiss_cheese

Thanks!!

You'll see in the file I've taken the time to build a lot of custom support. I'm interested to hear any thoughts you have around what's causing the poor print quality. Does the surface finish always suffer when it contacts a support structure?

Thanks,

Paul

Not sure how to post a file here so i made a download link.

.3mf files need to be Zipped before you can load them to the forum

RE: Can't get a clean Print

Right off the bat I think your printing this Hatchbox ABS way to hot, manufacture recommends you you print in the 210C to 240C range. I have printed a reasonable amount of Hatchbox ABS and I print it at, fist layer 220C ,230C extruder after that, and 90C bed (for smaller items) and 100C (for lager) I use a layer of glue stick on Smooth PEI sheet. also when I print this I use an enclosure, and you did mention you have that. I think your brim is fine and your supports seem to be ok, I would clean my nozzle real well with some cold pulls and brush the burnt filament from the nozzle and heat block it looks as though you have been burning the filament, and the extra high temps were probably causing the under extrusion I see in the prints.

One other bit of advice, if you find your still having a problem with the larger piece, print it separately and with ABS always let it cool nice and slow before attempting to remove it from the build plate.

I hope this helps please let us know how it turns out

Edit: you actually do need to add a bit of support under the lip on the interior of the larger piece, and I would change the Bridging angle to 45Degrees, sorry I missed that at first.

I also forgot to mention that when using a brim you need to turn off elephants foot compensation, it's set to 0.2 by default and severs the connection of the brim to the model. I forget about this because I use all my own profiles and have done away with it being on by default.

RE: Can't get a clean Print

This is a bit embarrassing because it goes against what my normal way, however I was Using 2.3 RC3 when I sliced your model the first time, and later today I sliced it again using the proper version 2.2 as I should have been doing all along, and your supports are absolutely fine. I would still adjust my bridging to 45 degrees but no reason to re-examine the your supports they are good relative to the proper working version of slicer.

So many people have been using 2.3 that I started using it by default to examine .3MF files and this was the wrong way to go, so I'm done with that. it completely changed the supports.

@swiss_cheese

Thanks for all your help.

I did a reprint yesterday. in general, it was much better. I'm still struggling to get that lip or foot of the front of the part to come out cleanly while using support.

Admittedly I tried a different solution to print. Your settings suggestions were very helpful. If you have any tips on how to solve the problem with the support to surface finish I'd love to hear them.

Thanks,

Paul
