Banding at inner top layer to outside wall

I have noticed on many pictures on the forum and print section that many people suffer from the strange banding or bulge on the outside wall if they have an internal top layer (flower/pen pot etc)

I have the same issue on my MK3s but this does not happen on my non-prusa printers

I have been on to the help and was asked to email in but was told that this is a common issue, however, no fix??

I have tried every setting and other slicers trying to solve this.

The band goes all the way around and is perfectly uniform.

If I print the same part on my qidi printer it comes out perfectly. If I print it without a top layer inside on the MK3s i.e. a tube the print is perfect

any ideas?

Sometimes I get better results by setting all the printing widths to 0.40.

This is really annoying though, I have never had this happening on any of my previous printers.

@sw3de

I found another thread on the issue here

but no real resolution. I have tried just about every setting.

On my cheap Chinese Qidi I just hit print and the part comes out without this bulge.

The only thing I have not tried is S3D but I am tempted to buy it and test for a couple of weeks to see if this is a slicer issue or a printer issue.

Well, I bought a copy of S3D to test and created a small part to test between the slicers.

The S3D with the Prusa downloaded profile works the best but does not completely eliminate the issue, but it is very slight compared to the PS versions. Which would lead me to believe the PS is playing a big part in the issue but not the whole problem.

Having tested 3 different slicers, I can only assume this is an issue with the printer (Firmware??) the more I look at other pictures of prints online and in this forum, the more I see the issue.

Just for fun I re-did my belts and checked all bearings and made sure everything was tight and re-calibrated from scratch. I then printed out a small toy that printed perfectly and then re-tried my test object using Prusa filament and defaults 0.2 Quality settings. same issue.

Aaaaah

Hi Flubber,
Have you tried printing external perimeters first?

not a cure, but may help!

@joantabb

I have. But I will repeat once my fill density tests have finished.

I am now marking all prints with the changes so I can keep track.

I don’t think the print quality was as good. But I now need to retest

External perimeters first now being tested.

All the density and perimeter tests have shown the same results. Extrude tests have shown the same results (going along the lines of over extruding at that point)

The funny thing is this is not on the same layer as the internal top layer. Its one layer up I added a small rise on one corner and could see the lines going down. It offsets by one line on the next layer every time. Depending on a few factors will depend how soon it corrects.

I have now spent days on this issue. I was expecting support to be a little more forthcoming 😣

Really starting to wish I had not bought this. I cannot replicate the issue on my other non-Prusa printer. The frustration is this knocks out the dimensions of any part that prints, depending on the internal structure.

If anyone else wants to try this.

Create a 100mm cylinder (The bigger the part the more it shows up) x 8mm then shell to 5mm and print. The step/shift/budge happens one layer after the 5mm internal floor through the outside wall and anything else on the plate.

The print will self-correct after xxx

Try turning on Thin Wall detection.

There are a few long threads on resolving this type of issue. Search for BULDGE (not my misspelling, but that's the thread title).

@tim-m30

Hi Tim,

I linked to the same thread to 😀

I have tried thin walls.... and checking extruder steps..... running out of options to try now

The other thread goes into a lot of detail; but the general thought was it is an artifact of the slicer.  Try a different slicer (like your S3D - but there are others out there) and see how that goes.  You can also search out how Plicer generates walls, and adjust the wall to extrusion volume to optimize.  You can also try adjusting the print settings to auto generate extrusions by setting them to zero rather that 0.42 or whatever.  This may also help.

Or, I believe Bob posted his profiles that he claims resolves the issue. It's been a while since I worried about it.  Any more I just accept the artifact as is and move on.

I have seen his profiles. They don’t fix the the issue but they do reduce it.

it’s a shame that an expensive printer with such a good reputation is unable to print something at basic as a pot very well.

I have simply run out of ideas on how to resolve this. I do not have enough experience or knowledge. Unfortunately, I too, will simply have to except the poor quality or buy a bigger Chinese printer to do everything with internal floors and external walls.

OK....

Now I am a little calmer.

Latest picture without a ridge/bulge/band etc

Some 30+ coasters later with insane notes and settings stuck to each I have finally solved this enough.

If you look closely you can see a colour shift around 5mm up but there is no external bulge anymore from the internal floor to the external wall. That's about as good as I can get. I don't know why I get a colour shift. It happens with all filament colours tested. Assuming something to do with the density of the material at that point, an artifact with where the bulge should be or just a temp thing???? But a colour shift line I can handle, a wonky print not so much. You do have to look for it now as it is very subtle or unless like me you have been obsessing over the first 5.2mm of print 😀

This was sliced with Prusa Slicer.

Sorry about the dusty bed 😀

Does anyone need a collection of 50mm, 70mm, and 100mm coasters?
