ABS Assistance

I’ve been printing in PLA with no problems and needed to switch to ABS and I having a couple issues.  (Using brand new sealed Prusa Filament)

1) The top of the ABS prints are very rough, like a lunar landscape compared to the PLA print of the same item (PLA Photo in Silver) The bed side is perfect. In photo #2 (ABS in Black) you can see the rough texture on the top of the print.

2) Also, I’ve been experiencing more filament jams with ABS (every other print) and I’m not sure why.  I’m using the standard Slicr settings for Prusa ABS.  I’m sure there are some settings that can make an improvement but I’m not sure which to try.  Thank you!

Thank you!

RE: ABS Assistance

Are you making any changes to the default ABS settings in Prusaslicer?

My experience is, specifically with many brands of PLA and Hatchbox ABS is that I've had several models, some relatively small and detailed, that have printed with both PLA and ABS with equal success.

I do know, from a recent thread here, that the Benchy boat, when printed using Prusaslicer and Hatchbox ABS filament, develops some artifacts that sometimes are known to appear on the boat.  One user reported that the artifact did not appear when sliced with Cura.

You might try slicing with Cura to see if there's any difference.

I've discovered an improvement in ABS print quality by doing two things: 1. Being sure that the printer warms up and stabilizes adequately (preheat for 10 minutes or so) before starting an ABS print with critical detail.  and 2. Use the draft shield option.  I use two loops with it.  This gives you more of a controlled environment, particularly if you are printing in a relatively cool room without an enclosure.
