0.5 or 0.6 Nozzle for CF Filaments?

Most of the Carbon Fiber enhanced filaments recommend printing with a hardened nozzle bigger than 0.4 in order to prevent clogging during retraction.  I'm leaning more towards 0.5 as I usually print this piece with 0.15 layer height but 0.2 would probably work.  There are 2 small pins that locate a board that needs to be accurate but that's about it.  Other than that layer height wouldn't matter for this print.

In PrusaSlicer there are defaults for 0.4 and 0.6.  How would I go about changing settings to use a 0.5 nozzle?  Is it just changing the nozzle diameter to 0.5 under Printer Settings --> Extruder 1?  Are there other settings that need to be adjusted as well?

Thanks.

RE: 0.5 or 0.6 Nozzle for CF Filaments?

Typically you can just change:

  • Nozzle size.
  • Layer height. 80% of nozzle size or less is recommended.
  • Extrusion width. 120% or less of nozzle size works reliably, though you go to up to nearly 200% most of the time. If you set extrusion widths to 0, PrusaSlicer will calculate these based on nozzle size for you.

You need to keep an eye on print speeds since even a 0.5mm nozzle is moving over 1.5X as much filament as a 0.4mm at the same speeds. You need to avoid exceeding the hotend's capacity. Fortunately, PrusaSlicer does this for us with the Maximum volumetric speed setting. With other sliders you have to calculate speeds to avoid printing too fast.
