z calibration issues

Hi

this has occurred "spontaneously" in the last couple of days.  after two years of (relatively) no-stress printing.

the printer starts printing in mid-air.

z-calibration fails every time (check axis).  if started within 100mm of the top, the carriage moves to the top and grinds against the screws as normal.  no blockages at all, not even a zip tie out of place).  if started any lower the carriage moves up 100mm or so and then asks for a nozzle clean then immediately fails.

the pinda probe is functional.  reading zero and one at the right time with manual testing.

i have tried manually moving the carriage to a lower point and then redoing calibration but it fails as above.
i have tried rebooting multiple times and updating the firmware image.

any hints please?

tested again and the pinda is working intermittently.  inspected it and somehow it is entirely destroyed.

RE: z calibration issues

I've had two of these fail.  In both cases the cable had a broken wire where the cable is connected to the probe. Over all,  I've added additional strain relief to all the sensor cables after having to relace both the heat bed, and hot end thermistors, as well both the Pinda and Finda probes.  I consider this normal wear and tear and something that all users should understand about devices that move with one end of a cable restrained from motion. In my case the Pinda and hotend thermistor cables were probably damaged by the number of hotend disassemblies I've made to clean out filament after print fails.
