Z-calibration errors

My printer started failing with various Z-calibration errors. I performed a factory reset and re-flashed the firmware to the latest version. When I ran through the setup Wizard, it got to the Z-calibration test and failed. I got to the point where you put a piece of paper under the nozzle with the steel sheet removed, and it tells you to immediately switch off the printer if it catches the paper.

It spent a full minute or so searching for calibration point 1 of 4. It started digging holes in the paper, so I switched it off.

Is this the PINDA sensor? I tried the test where you raise the Z-axis a bit and put a piece of metal under it, and this made the red light go off, so I thought the sensor was ok. What else should I check?

RE: Z-calibration errors

A high PINDA will do this. PINDA-nozzle height delta needs to be 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm.  Normally you drop the nozzle down until it is a paper sheet off the bed, then drop the PINDA onto a cable tie end. That's about 1.1 mm.

The PINDA sensor was a bit high. I readjusted it and ran the setup wizard. It failed finding the first point with the following error:

XYZ calibration failed. Bed calibration point was not found.

People have found that moving the extruder - by hand - to the far left sometimes helps; as does raising the X-axis (press and hold the control button until you get the Z adjust menu) until it tops out on both sides (makes hammer sounds).

I had upgraded the extruder from the MK3 to MK3S, and I also flashed the firmware with MK3S firmware. I think maybe that was a mistake?

I flashed it just now with MK3 firmware, and it passed the XYZ Calibration. (Though it still failed the selftest)

The MK3S requires S firmware; the filament sensor code is quite different and is not compatible between the MK3 and MK3S.  It must match.

I flashed it again with the MK3S firmware and updated the drivers. It worked! I don't know why it stopped working in the first place, but I'm printing again!

aaand, I get Z-Calibration errors again. I ordered a new PINDA sensor. We'll see if that fixes it. This is very frustrating.
